YellerSpirit, a huge THANKS for the junkyard info on Post 28,332! And, no sooner
than you provided that, you post one of those INSTANT CLASSIC nostalgia shots!
This photo of the Bartonsville, VT, covered bridge blends two of my fave
photographic objets d'art: a covered bridge and a junkyard full of old automobiles!
From this angle, you can't see the river and railroad tracks that are there, too.)
Squinting at the pic, the newest car I see is about 1955, so I reckon the pic was
snapped in the early '60s.



BUT, this sent me searching, and it wasn't long 'til I found that the Bartonsville Covered
Bridge is not only alive but quite well. It seems to be a real point of pride amongst townfolk,
and the internet shows that it's also a favorite subject of photographers, being photogenic
from either end. The auto boneyard is now a thing of the distant past. SO, we can see a
THEN&NOW comparison, and almost every thread regular loves those!

Bartonsville is on the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Highway (S.R. 103) in Windham Co.
in southern Vermont. With a span of nearly 160 feet, the Bartonsville Covered Bridge
is one of the longest remaining in the state. It was built in 1870-71 by Sanford Grangers
using the pleasant-looking but functional Town Lattice Truss technique. The one-lane
structure spans the Williams River and is located on Lower Bartonsville Road. As the
"now" views show, the bridge has been protected with a new copper roof. Placed on
the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, it is listed in the world guide as bridge
#45-13-11.

</TD></TR><TR><TD>The Bartonsville Covered Bridge was built using the Town Lattice Truss method, long popular in the 19th
Century. The design was patented by Ithiel Town in 1820 and 1835. Holes for two oak pins were pre-drilled
everyplace where the beams overlap. Older HAMBers can imagine the hand tools and sweat involved,
among them the brace-and-bit drill, wood mallet and bow saw.
