Ok, I know this probably isnt helping his problem much and I dont want to hijack his thread, but I always figured that extra hole on the pass side of the water pump mating surface was a "bypass" that was built in. The way I see it, running a hose either through the heater core, or just a loop from the intake to the water pump is doing the exact same thing that small hole is doing....putting water on the intake side of the pump....please correct me if I am wrong, so I can inform my engines that they have been working incorrectly since 1988, thanks:D:D:D....
Now if he has no loop or heater, and has plugged that small hole (with silicone), I think that it would create a problem, but not convinced that the problem would be limited to only one side. I am with the guys that say its either and intake or exhaust gasket/seal prob....time to invest in a vacuum gauge, and one of those infared temp sensing guns...If you work on your own cars they are good investments anyway.

Just out or curiosity....are you running a pcv system? If so how is it routed, and also where are you getting your modulator vacuum for your tranny? (im guessing its a th350)

The header color could be a difference in air flow over the outside of the headers.

You might have a late model water pump that uses a flat belt. If this is the case, the pump is running backwards.

No leaks detected, no vacuum on the dipstick tube.
Th350 vacuum fitting in one of runners of the rear of the intake.

Its a short style water pump so definately early.

If it is only the header getting hot, then it is an exhaust valve issue. Either to tight or burned. perhaps a valve isnt seating?

One thing good, its the valve right where the header is hottest. no more crap shoot.

Hmmm, two carbs and one side getting hot. Throw a four barrel carb on it, see if that solves it. How confident are you that both carbs operate correctly?

  10. Everything is pointing to a lean condition on that bank, too much air or too little fuel. I'd leave it as is, put in fresh plugs, take it for a nice run and read the plugs, see what the differences are between the two banks.
