Can newer chevy straight six engines, such as 250's, 292's, be adapted to use front and rear motor mounts such as early 194's, 216's and 235's?

I am asking because I am looking to do a swap into a '31 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup. I want to keep the parallels leafs and use a drop axle and keep the current steering set-up. I think if I used the side mounts on a newer 250 or 292 then I will have to change the steering.

Has anyone out there put a newer 250 or 292 with side mounts into and early 30's Chevy and been able to keep the stock steering?

    Thanks,
    Scott

I think you'll find you will need to change your steering. Maybe you could move the box back toward the cab and lengthen your drag link. I'm using ch***is Eng. tube mounts with a 250 in my 1929 Chevy frame. I'm not going to be using the stock hood, so I moved my mounts forward a few inches, but there still is very little clearance for the steering box and exhaust. [IMG]

i installed a 250 in my 45 GMC, i made my own engine crossmember out of 1/8"x1"x2" tubing and two pieces of 2" angle, i used the stock trany crossmember and made a adapter out of a 1" piece of angle, i used a rad out of a 66 chevelle moved infront of the rad support

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I think that this remains on topic.

As an alternative, has anyone changed to a modern steering box with a drop axle and the parallel leafs? What box do you suggest?

Sorry, I dont know anything about the 250's or 292's. I am putting a later 235 in mine with side mounts.

a `54 235c.i. engine will bolt right in and it is a full pressure motor and there is a lot of hop up stuff available. just something to think about.

I have two '32 Chevy's and both have larger inline sixes in them. I had no trouble installing a 216 in one and a 292 in the other. But I do have a different drive line and manual transmission in one. The other has a Power Glide in it.

Normbc9, what steering setup have you used? That's one nice looking car!

That's bad*** with the side draft carbs. Where did you get that set-up?

Does anyone know if all the more modern sixes (194, 230, 250, 292...1960s on up) are the same length? I have read that the 292 is taller than the others, but what about the length?

inline292....Thanks, I figured out what to do about the motor mounts. My most recent question was about the dimensions of the different inline sixes. Just wondering if a 292 is longer than a 194, 230, 250. I know a 292 is taller, but can't really find out about the length from the front of the block to the rear.

292 is the same length as a 250 just a little taller.

'63-79 292 water pumps are approx 1/2" longer than '80-87 292 pumps. The 194-250 pumps are the same depth as the '80-87 292 pumps.

250's and 292's do have a pair of threaded holes to either side of the timing cover that could be used for motor mounts if needed, but I wouldn't do it unless I was mounting at the sides of the bellhousing also.

I don't know why something couldn't be made to work for a motor mount on the drivers side. Langdon's sells a motor mount that is offset forward about 4" to clear the steering in a 49-54 car. If that doesn't work, at least the concept should work. Figure it out...

Enclosed is my 250ci fitting in the stock engine bay of 32chevy. hood fits. I think i bought the mounts from pete and jakes. Ch***is is boxed. Also if your keeping the original straight axle i definately recomend the ECI bolt on disc brake kit $600. Check your spindle though for wear
