Any pics- "Blue Paint with flattened clear"

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fordstandard, Aug 2, 2011.

  1. Or 70s-80s when I was a kid going to car shows. Flat paint is a new thing(except for flat black hoods on muscle cars). Don't get me wrong, it's better than surface rust. I have a lot of friends with satin painted cars; they are still my buddies, and I like their cars, but I'd like the cars better if they were shiny. Seems like it wouldn't require much more work.

It seems that memories about tradition can be flawed. One method for colored "primer" was to mix a quart of color with a gallon of primer. The result after a couple of washings was a satin finish. The photo here shows that treatment done in 1967.

  3. Exactly what we did in 1963 to my '51 and other club members cars. Also love the comeback about how stupid to pinstripe a car with primer, where were you in '62? We would stripe anything that stood still long enough. Hell I even flamed mine. Finally did get a shiny paint job, but still thought the satin and suede looked better. Primer spots all over the car did not cut it for us, then or now.
At least half the cars (10 or more) in my car club in '62-'68 where in primer or satin and most of them were striped. If some overspay or touchup covered the striping I would re-stripe it the next day.

main thing you need to know is... you got what you got. their is no wet sanding. buffing or what ever it is what it is. or you have to start over if you want to fix it

Some people just like to *****! You'd think this was a ladies auxillary as much *****ing goes on on this board.

There is a lot that is not traditional, but is acceptable. Hell there is **** that was done and isn't acceptable. GET OVER YOURSELF!!

    Here's a couple I have done.

I agree, build it the way you want it. It's me that just can't embrace any part of the rat rod culture. Ron

This is the temporary finish on my ***us-built Tudor. It will get the same shiny shade of blue as the wheels as time and funds allow. Currently is is a gallon of white DP primer mixed with a quart of blue DP primer.

My '49 Shoebox was flat black back in 1962/63 when I was in high school but it was because it was ****py stock paint. The shinny cars were show cars mostly or cars you'd see in magazines (show cars!), the rest of us were just happy to have a car we could make our own with our own budget.

Man, some of these comments on here make me nervous to post any pictures of my truck when I finish it. Guess you gotta look at it like it's the Super Bowl, no matter what the outcome is there's always going to be people leaving disappointed and some who could care less. All I know is I'm having a hard time deciding on a final color for my truck and a durable satin finish is a good fit until I do. Liking all the satin blues at that...

Here's a few various satin blue cars that may give some ideas. Hope these help a bit. Search Clark's posts, he has done many satin that look great. I THINK he uses PPG flex & flat clear.

I did my rpu with SEM hot rod black. I am NOT a pro painter by any stretch. It is a pre-flattened single stage, but they only offer it in black. For what it's worth, it sprayed & looks great to me, & is very easy to maintain. Mothers Showtime spray detailer & a microfiber make it look like new.

Put on your thick skin, the satin vs. shiny debate seems to wad up everybody's *******

I hit my 31' Tudor with Ace Hardware satin hunter green to protect the metal mainly because the PO had started part of it and I knew the body was coming back off anyways. I was shocked at all the comments I get on the paint! I'm not talking about the R#% kids either. The plus side is the paint hides my unfinished body work and I don't sweat gravel roads!

My 58 with Flattening agent in enamal to hide my body work lack of skills. This is right after painting and it had a little shine but got duller over a couple of weeks. It came out looking more like old paint than satin.

Sometimes, that is the effect we are looking for. Patina, faux patina, but patina nonetheless. Nice.

I hear that Valspars industrial paint can be tinted almost any color, will suspend metal flakes and pearls, and is available in semi-gloss and flat...and it's tough as nails. I think I may go this way...
