Actually, it's in Portuguese! :p You can switch it to English (see the combined Stars & Stripes/Union Flag), although some of the translations are a bit dodgy and a few of the links in the sub-menus haven't been translated and just show up as a single letter.

We have this unknown early underslung racing car posted on The Old Motor and thought someone over here might know something about it. I have seen a photo of it in the past but cannot place it now. The crew in this behemoth are known. Follow the link just below.

I had a Chrysler Airflow coupe ....... wonderful car but I really doubt that it was wind-cheating only looked like it should be.

Bluto, if this does not infringe the "don't show your money club" rules, may I ask what other cars you have or had. Must admit a soft spot for the Airflow coupe.

Ehdubya, great pics thanks for posting. I only had pics of the car at Milwaukee and Sheepshead for the 1917 match races, now if I can only dig up the rest.

In the interest of some accuracy DePalma's car was not white nor was it ever referred to as the "white Packard" that I know of. The car was Packard creme (pale yellow) with Packard Blue wheels. More importantly it did not carry a twin six engine but a 12 cylinder overhead cam Liberty aero engine prototype.

The Sub was a much better car on the dirt and the 299 Packard (called the 299) was much better on the boards.

The Delage was Oldfield's backup car and it also carried a "new Miller motor during the summer of 1917.-Jim

5 mile race for steamers only, at Aquidneck Trotter Park, in Rhode Island, on September 6, 1900 (ten half-mile laps). Driving the car at left is John Jacob Astor, IV who came in second

  20. I happened to run across this picture while visiting the web site for the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
It shows the Spencer Penrose trophy for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, circa 1928.

    Neat trophy!!

Stop by and see Ralph Mulford and his Lozier friends at a series of posts from the Peter Helck Collection on TheOldMotor.com. We are also featuring artwork from both Helck books; The Checkered Flag and Great Auto Races.

Yup that was him, I got a little more info and a picture of him at home, and last year I saw a single seater race car in piqua from piqua at a show but it didn't occur to me that since johnny was the only race car driver from piqua that it might be his race car! So I haqve to find them this year and ask if they know.

The car he died in was from Greenville, Ohio - the first "Iddings Special".

(Gilmore posted the Q awhile back-" know of the 100 MPH Club. Anybody know what the "Sunset Club" was about?")
    Guess #2
The Sunset Club of Chicago, founded in the 1890s, loosely organized group of men who met regularly and happily to casually discuss events of the day and find ways of embellishing their existence and promote socialization.
(Probably an antidote to the Great Gatzby Syndrome)

  28. Indy 500 Question: Can anyone suggest a reference, link or even an old book or magazine article that showcases the winning trophies for the Indy 500 before the Borg-Warner tradition began in 1936?
I know the Speedway's HoF has some on display but not all. I have an idea or two for some future paintings and I'd like to be able to tie the correct trophy to the appropriate winning year. Thanks. :D

A stunning piece by world renowned artist Peter Helck shows the winning Duesenberg of Jimmy Murphy leading the Ballot of Ralph DePalma at the 1921 French Grand Prix at LeMans.
