sad to see an injured flathead.A flathead melt down is not a good thing, yet the SBC crowd will probably use this to defend their pile.Like it doesnt happen to them.

The evidence is in the photos. Oil pouring from the hole above the starter, coolant pouring from the hole in the oil pan. This really ****s. Glad all else is OK and that you have a spare mill. Be very careful about salvaging parts off the old engine before you find out how the oil pan got full of coolant.

I am impressed the most with your good at***ude about a bummer incident. No one wants to have trouble when on a hot rod outing, especially not a major engine blow-up. But I admire your at***ude and youthful spirit as evidenced by grabbing the camera and taking pictures while the carnage was till fresh. Then tearing it down on the road while waiting for Dad to show with the trailer. Keep on "roddin" and keep on with the good at***ude!

Looks like the oil pan failed......to contain all the parts.

We're not sure what the cause was. At this point we just want to get the car back on the road by the weekend. Something gave way in there, and became a 3000 rpm battering ram.

  8. tough luck man. looks like you were having tons of fun though.

What was their damage to the block, itself? Glad no one was hurt (but the flatty)!

Ever see a 75 year old SBC?

Let the SBC crowd have thier lil crate engines...that just leaves more good flatty blocks for the rest of us :D

And yes, that happens to SBC's all the time!

That's a great story! And a horrible story! I suppose that averages out to a regular story...

    Yikes,
Glad damage was limited to the ol' Flattie and not you or your gal !!!
And yes you sure did get your money's worth out of that ol' gal too.
Your at***ude is admirable...going on and enjoying yourself anyway...
Good luck on the new (used) engine...hope it performs as well as the last one did for you.
    Cheers............

I feel your pain, the same thing happened to me about 3 months ago.I had a 50 Flathead in car and it started smoking and had low compression in two cylinders so i pulled it out of car and when i dropped oil pan i had little pieces of metal in bottom. So i used one of the 3 backup motors i have.

Ouch that hurts to look at, any damage to the block itself?
and again great coverage of something that does happen to every type of engine at some point in time brings us back to reality that it is just a machine after all.........
Good luck on the new engine.................

  15. Damn that really ****s, at least you have another ready to go. Probably a good idea when running 70 year old engines. Yes it does happen to Chevies too. This can happen to ANYTHING with moving parts.

SBC's are inexpensive and common, just haul the remains to the s**** yard and then build another one after an hour's search of Craig's list. Just like a Flathead was 60 years ago.
The OP is getting it done....

The Latin name for a flathead is "hand grenadeus" love them but DAMN. Remember 60 years ago they were being replaced by the 1000's;but some survived and they are the ones emptying wallets now.I love them, but let others own them.
