question for you san francisco Hambers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jimmygrrr, Aug 10, 2011.

  1. I will be moving to San Francisco for a new job in Jan and I was wondering what to do with my '51 ford. A lot of places I'm seeing are quoting parking spaces at $200-300 a month, what do you guys do about car storage?

    thank you,
    Jimmy

  2. I dont live there but have been all over the bay area, your best bet is south of the city Milbrae, Burlingame maybe South San Francisco

San Francisco is not car friendly. For your $200-$300 dollars per month you will get a marginal parking space in an alley. Parking on the street is even worse. In addition to "parking rash" you have to make sure that your car is moved on street sweeping days or it will be towed. Parking meters down town are absurd... 25 cents for 5 minutes. The farther down the peninsula (south of S.F.) the situation is better... not great, but better. Good luck on your new job.

  4. You guys nailed it. I was born and raised in SF and being into both bikes and cars I couldn't wait to move a few minutes south. SF, unless you have a private garage in your house, is not Hot Rod friendly... All you have to do is move 10-20 min. South, and not only can you get something to rent w/ a 2 car garage cheaper than the city, the weather is alot better too.. Hope this helps...

  5. thanks for the replies. I have heard that housing / garages are cheaper south of the city, but I have to live in the city for my job. I was looking for alternate storage of my car, maybe a garage or indoor storage for rent within say 30 min drive. anybody know if that is available? any other suggestions would be helpful too. anyone live in the city? what do you do?

There is BART (metro system) Cal Train, ferry lines so that you can live outside SF and commute in. Otherwise the $300 is about right

I worked at SFO for 33 years and live in Shoreview-San Mateo. Why, you may ask. Because I told the real estate agent I wanted the cheapest house with a 2 car garage within the South City to Redwood City corridor. Here it is and here I am. Me and a bunch of other aircraft mechanics, a Dollar rent a car mechanic, a Mercedes dealership Mechanic, A Chevy dealership mechanic, and the local HOG president. On my block. Do we hassle each other about cars parked around? No. Why are you limited to the City?

Looks like a "Rump Ranger Rumble" is coming your way soon

  11. The job requires that I live in San Francisco county, otherwise I would commute. I understand that the city is a terrible place for hot rods, but the job is just too good to pass over. If it comes down to it, I will just leave her in San Diego. Just trying to see if I have any options near the city to store my car so I can still drive it. It would kill me to have it just sitting up in a garage all year and only driving it when I came home to visit every so often.

  12. I work down in the financials and used to live in Richmond, basically, BART will get you most places. I moved to Marin and now take the ferry to work.

The one advantage to SF proper is that there are a lot of public transport options out there, unless having a car is required.

Oh, Hunters point seems cheap...but it makes Richmond look like Pac heights.

Just doing a search looks like $100 a month out doors, $200 indoors. Might find better on Craig's list. If you want to leave it in San Mateo, behind a fence but outdoors, we might be able to work something out, until you make better arrangements.

  14. I will keep looking. Thanks for the offer, will get in touch with you if I can't figure anything out by Jan.

  15. Any one live it the City? If so, what do you do with your rides?

  16. I'm of no help here. BUT I did see this on Jalopnik recently. This may be a clue to the situation you're questioning.

  17. I don't think that helps me too much but it is freaking amazing!!!!

My brother in law lives there and rents a garage spot two blocks from his house for 300 a month. Over of ceasar chavez, the space is pretty big his jeep fits well and has space for a motorcycle too. There is stuff out there just keep lookin once you get there, the spot he got was not listed in any papers or online he happened to be walking by and saw the sign hanging on the door. Some of the mini storages in the area are a possibilty too,my company rents one in san leandro and there are alot of the units that have cars in them. we store a diesel compressor in ours. I think its 200 a month. Just some ideas in case you havent thought of them good luck man!
