    Thanks...(the center photo of the M&R car, obviously not Bob Haines in the fire suit, and not M&R working on the car, though the cowl still says M&R...the car is longer than the original, which Riceman is carefully replicating)...anyone know the story? Riceman?

    Is the bottom photo of the Keeling & Clayton car? I recall that car a couple hundred years ago, but I can't tell for certain.

  7. Jim, thanks for posting and definitely some very cool stuff there - BUT the Pro Mod stuff doesn't belong on here and will cause some problems. This is limited to 60's and older drag cars, not more modern types

    I sense this being ever so slightly off topic here, but I've got a whole sermon series I could insert here with respect to fried noodles.
    I'll just say the housing market today couldn't be more appropriate and deserving for speculative developers......... those champions of job creation.

    Irwindale killed Fontana; no longer a need to venture 25 extra miles. Still the track operated as late as say 1971 or so. Injected funnies, AA/GS and a few booked fuel altered shows served as the main show, no more 32 top fuel shows or big fuunycar events Not but a few blocks from the track were a series of abandoned wineries. These cobble stoned constructed buildings were used in the Combat TV series as they appeared like something you would see in Italy making a great back drop. I recall a few blocks from my house they used some of the plowed fields for a few episodes of Mannix wherein a plane was to land carrying Mannix to meet with a kidnapper or some such thing.

    I've heard about clay strips all my life, but never actually saw one. I know people told me our old home town track was only paved out past the starting line in the beginning, and some said packed clay was a better surface and hated oil asphalt with pea gravel base.
    Tracks evolved with the cars, including clutch science I suppose.
    What would happen if you wound the motor and dumped the clutch on one of those early Fords with spindly axles on VHT? What would happen to a modern day pro mod car on dirt?

    I've heard of Lloyds, and the Double H strip, and a magnificent web site today. We went through Blairsville on our way to Clayton and then up to Franklin NC a couple years back. Love that country! And volumes of racing history in the state of Ga.
    We used to get in as kids by sweeping our track the Fairview Super; aka Mid Tn. Dustbowl. It was paved by then and we applied rosin and swept that in for close to 300 or 400 of the 1,000 ft length. By the wee hours of Sunday after the temp had cooled and the barometer had risen and stabilized, and a few layers of tire rubber had been laid down, there was some serious hell raised with the last few cars.
    Seeing a car stand up with the driveshaft turning underneath and hearing the engine noise echo back after they had shut down, left an outstanding impression on a kid.
    I wish there were some photos to contrast those home made drag cars in motion with the glamor shots we're accustomed to.

    Our old dragstrip was way ahead of it's time, full concrete 1/4 and shut down, concrete pits---yep, WWII airfield.
    It doesn't look much different now than when we raced on it in the 60s/70s.

    This shot reminds me of Cherokee Raceway in Frederick Oklahoma. Racing was done on a South taxi way, the cars ran from East to West and the timing trailer sat on the South side of the track. Not for sure how long this surface was, but without a doubt if you had a chute failure it was not a problem to stop before the end of the track even at 190+ mph. The last time I remember racing there was about 1973.

    There were a number of these old WW II training bases in Texas and Oklahoma due to the number of sunny days available for training sessions throuhout the year.

    (Edit) This base was used mainly for B-26 Marauder bomber training. George Gobel was a flight instructor at Frederick and also at Altus Oklahoma. George being the comedian that he was said on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, due to his war effort "no Japanese plane ever got past Tulsa"

    I just noted that the dragster at the top in running a front mounted Potvin style blower, has an Enderle injector hat. How engenious. Both the Aussies and the Brits refined the R&D of 6 and 4 cylinder motors to a high degree.
