Sorry man. I was not trying to promote a engine contest. Flash light sounds better to me than a vacuum gauge or the use your ears method. PS I never said "EXACTLY" I was just trying to help, guess it pick on the newbie night.

it would be close, and probably would be close enough for most applications. Were not building a swiss watch. a few degrees one way or the other isn't going to be the end of the world.

Back in the early 60's when I was a poor college student I would advance the distributor until the starter dragged and then back it off slightly. It was a 406 Ford and the balancer had been installed backwards.

I think you missed the point. Why apply a timing strip to something that won't stay true? Just leads to re-application. But it's whatever works for you, remember I'm the one who does it by ear.

I made a positive stop out of a hollowed-out spark plug, tapped 3/8", a bolt screwed in and loc***ed...head was cut off, and shank rounded on the end and polished. Nice tool.

A 'hangaround' wanted to borrow the tool to zero in his TDC mark. He brought it back bent and mangled. I asked what happened...He said it made a noise after he installed it.
I asked, "A noise?" He said "Yeah, soon as I hit the starter!"

I was shaking my head...and thinking about shaking his.
