I have been reading through old HR mags and reading old threads about RPU's and I think my favorite of all time is Dean Lowe's A pickup. It just looks right and it makes my peepee feel funny.

When I was 15, a whole life time ago, this little '29 of Arnold Avilla's did it for me. I loved this RPU then, and still do. I would have built mine exactly like it, but it wouldn't have been NHRA legal, and I wanted to go racing. Like my roadster, Arnold's was built my him and his father.

I liked Dean's truck better with the Halibrands. ;)

That black RPU sits perfect. It's not easy to get a full fendered Model A to sit that low.

And I liked the Halibrands better too.

Okay, Deans does it for me big time - always has, but this one gets it too... Oh, and this one too!

Dean Lowe's by far but the one that Mr. Lowe posted always sat well with me as well. I have the HRM issue with the color photo of Avilla and his girl sitting in the RPU. Love that pic, if we're saying favorite then it's Dean's and pretty much any version!

  10. There was a really nice surf style turquoise rpu in Rod and Custom last year..... It had fender tips that were surfboard inspired, and looked like a 60s show rod

Edit....did a search. It belongs to Lynn Byrd. It was in the Mad Fabricators movie

I've liked Dean's truck since that issue of Hot Rod came in the mail but my favorite has to be a little Black one that a guy let me drive about 30 years ago at the Tri Cities Rods and Roadsters Labor Day run. That was one nifty little truck that scared the daylights out of me when I nailed it.

The black one with the red wheels shows up on Saturday every year at L.A.R.S. and has the most wicked sounding flathead I have ever heard. I'm not sure what it is about it, but it doesn't sound like any flattie I've been around. The owner is a bit tight lipped too....

Greg Sharp's was (is) black, similar stance...Remember Ray Silva's from San Jose? ('57-'84) Also, Mel Taormino's and Art's Kart.
Joe Cardoza and Les Erben, also of San Jose. (In 1963, they measured Ray Silva's new Jag rear installation before he was finished, then raced to install Jags in their roadster pickups first, bribing Gary at Reliable Plating for 2 day chrome service... nice guys.)
Also Dick Mendonca's black '29 R/P, full fendered, bobbed bed...There were a few.
They were in the Dean Lowe class, but barely. Dean's was perfection.

(Hey, how about that? 'Lowe Class'... Sorry, Dean. Couldn't resist! Quite the opposite...)

  21. I've always been particial to Jake's. The other one is a Lobeck built one.

I'm probably like most of you who are close to my age, I grew up drooling over Dean's rpu. That car is just so right in all respects. The best part is that he used it to the fullest too.

Great hot rod, ranks right up there with all the famous ones. :)

This one belongs to my old friend Tom Conley. He also has a '29 roadster that is lower than the RPU. No suspension travel, but absolutely as cool as Model A's get!

  25. I like the Blue Beetle. Is it a real car or just a model kit? I've never seen the real one if it is around......

That's a very informative shot, Blake. I've been trying to figure out how much space there is between the frame the splash apron at its front end. Doesn't look like there's nearly enough for what I had in mind.

Deans,in any form. If HotRod had done a photo of it with Linda Vaughn I'd have been blind before I turned 15.

Surely there were other nice RPU's besides Dean's though? WHat about early flathead renditions?
