I believe that car was built in Minnesota. It is the same car as the silver one. Not sure who owned it. A friend of mine, Hat rod builder and artist extraordinaire, Bill Michaelson (RIP) did a bunch of work on it and Dave Bell striped the firewall. The car was sold and went to Wisconsin I think ... the flames were added later. I agree - they are not really appropriate for the car. I have a bunch of old photos of it I could try and track down.

Don`t call that a carson top. It`s a vinyl covered chopped coupe.

For all its faults, it's still far better than a lot of new-built stuff appearing at shows these days. It isn't the prettiest of customs, but then not everything put together "back in the day" was perfect either. I could get to love it if it was mine, with a few changes, although I'm almost scared to ask what the front and rear suspension is...

The Minnesota Car was owned by Tom and Jackie Durand of Little Canada and was called "Ruby Slipper".

This is a perfect example of a nice car that was finished.......... and then the owner keeps adding and adding and adding until it looks like it drove through PepBoyz with its magnets turned on. I see it done alot. Once it gets to a certain point they should just strip it down and start over. and BOB I kinda like the flames, but I like yours better even if they are not tribal! haha. PS BOB I live in Brea now, we may be neighbors?

In the 90's is all I can say ... Mark Moriarity was a friend of Bill's (who built it) - he may be able to add more to the story ... and as sunroofcord mentioned - it was built for Tom and Jackie Durand of Little Canada MN

weather its right or wrong the flames work or not what you guys our american cousins have to understand is that stuff like this is few and far between, this car was at a 'new' all types cl***ic car show catering for lots of different marques, there was 3 32 roadsters, a 31 chevy coupe, a fordson, a Willys and the odd ford pop and then this rolls in, as my p***ion runs around Kustoms more than pro-street you can probably understand the impact this made....

great info from everyone by the way, i'm going to try and p*** it on to the current owner....if i can find him

    hi there
    i can answer your questions
the car was the silver one mike key put in his book
i bought it at the msra back to the fiftys in 1989 or 1990 im not really sure
i paid $8500 for a bunch of parts worth less than $500 bucks
the front subframe and rear end are 74 camaro the engine was a 74 400ci smalblock
the front frame was cut and the subframe was pushed into the frame and welded to the bottom lip the rear had the springs welded to the frame with no shackles, the floor and firewall were made up of more than twenty different pieces of tin sheet metal screwed together with two inch sheetmetal screws, the battery was behind the glovebox door with a hole punched through the firewall for the positive cable and i was cool going 75mph on the freeway

yes i can hear all of you screeming what a dumb a**

but i loved the look and figured i can fix that, no big deal
as time went by i realized what a fool i was

    bring in bill [the king]michelson
he just finished restoring the wife's 69 ss chevelle
and said he would redo the car, he replaced the floor, firewall, brought in someone to redo the subframe and rearend ,bill did all the bodywork, paint and fabrication, the roof was covering a real bad chop job so we just had the covering replaced
he then brought in ben stoehr to do the interior, dave bell did the art work and stripes [the nicer ones anyway]
bill's close personal friend "george barris " told us he would be proud if we added the crest's to the car
anything to keep him in the media what a "showman"
the car was now a safe car to run down the highway with every thing working
$35,000 and eleven weeks start to finish i had a real car

the car won first or better in over a hundred shows and appeared in more than a dozen magazines with the nicest feature in the october '92 street rodder
one spring day i tripped in my garage and cracked the paint on the right front
at that point i became so depressed that i decided to sell it
the guy i sold it to added the "fugly"flames along with more stripes to daves art work
he also changed the interior. added the "hokey spots " added another antenna to the p***enger fender, renamed the car teen angel
it then went to wisc. i then heard it was in michigan, and then one day it was on ebay in california

we lost track for a while until the other day the wife googled 40 ford teen angel which brought us here

and now you all have the rest of the story

My dad carlie springer of frontenac mn built this car, paid $150.00 for it chopped it himself in our back yard. The front fenders were widened 2 inches on each side and it was chopped 7 inches, it was painted monte carlo cortez silver, and put camaro running subframe. We still owned it when it was in mike keys book at back to the 50's. We now have (and took up a year after we sold the 40) a 47 merc with a carson top and he has had many more customs...its really sad when the builder does not get the credit they deserve. P.S.. they gooked up this car!!!

To each his own. Is there something that could be done to
that top to make it look better?

  26. Tribal flames are like what we used to call seaweed flames but that have little peaks where the flames would be rounded. Let me find you a pic.

Something along these lines. I think that idea is something that looks African.
