Ron ("RonCo") Popiel must have sold a gazillion of these iconic
gadgets after they hit the TV screen starting back in the '70s !!!
Chuck of ChucksTackleBox.com states they were pretty well made.
He collects vintage fishing tackle. And as crazy as a lot of RonCo's
stuff might have seemed, people chuckled THEN sent in their
money to see if the goods could deliver as promised. (Maybe
Preston Tucker should have had a Ron P. for a pitch man back
in the late-'40s???)

These '70s images are at Chuck's site; THANKS, Chuck! Other
MEMORABLE RonCo stuff we saw on the tube included such
things as the Veg-O-Matic and the Popiel Donut maker! Yowza!

I own one of the little Desoto's and I can say, I am surprised that she did not fall through the hood. They are made of vacuum formed polystyrene and very thin and brittle

I've never seen this shot before, just one of the adult model on
the '58 DeSoto hood. Despite the obvious OPTIMISM this promo
shot was meant to convey, it reeks of irony, at least in retrospect!

Here, DeS had been in business 30 years, making cars popular
with the conservative or older buyer, then adding Hemi hipo in
the mid-'50s. But this ad campaign -- obviously conceived early
in the season -- did not foresee DeSoto sales plunging to half of
their '57 level! Whoa! Coming off of THREE straight record sales
years, these ladies, Groucho on TV, and President Irving Wolson
in Detroit simply didn't know that THIS was actually the beginning
of the end for DeSoto.

Looks like International was trying to get into the airflow tanker market that Chrysler had. They used 1939 Nash headlights in the fenders instead of the stanchion mounted original style. Early custom job by the factory?

It's a 1939 era International DR-60 Mobiloil fuel truck with a 179" wheelbase, and a FBB 401 engine and a 1600 gallon capacity fuel tank.

 

Thanks! That's what was throwing me (the Nash headlights). I saw them, but thought it said "International" on the hood sides. Nice lookin rig. and thanks for the 10 minute response time.

 

Ok...found a "normal" one in a 1939 ad. man, they don't make em like that anymore.

 

I like the one with the Nash headlights better. Makes a nice custom look for a truck.

 

as for the theme im guessing gas stations? heh.
