I picked this cool finned aluminum oval possibly a voltage regulator up in a box of garage junk up at a swap meet a while back. I took it apart to clean it up and its innerds consisted of a couple solid state parts. If i never found out what it was I figured on hiding some electrical inside of it. Any clues on what it was or is? It has a S cast in it with a solid state electrode in the middle. All my buddy's are all stumped and all searches came up dry. Thanks!

It appears to be a heat sink for a power transistor.

Looks like an uncompleted machined casting of some sort...
Still has the hold down tabs on it that normally get sawed off once the first op. machining operation is done..
Then again, I'm probably full of crap!!

Why would you saw off the hold down tabs?;)

I dont think it's automotive but it looks neat.

A lot of aluminum castings are formed with hold down tabs so they can be bolted down on a machining fixture... Once one side get's machined, the tabs are cut off with a band saw and then blended in with a 90 degree hand grinder.. Then the parts are ready for the second side to be machined..

the solid state (I don't know maybe a diode) says Bendix. The harness that was plugged in it said trans. on one side and you can flip it over and plug it back in with emerg written in the opisite side.

what you got there is a doohickey, it connects to that one wire that goes to the thingamabob and makes that other thingy light up and make funny noises. congrats.

I just know if I mount it on the fire wall above the flathead polished up like the finned heads it will look pretty spiffy hiding some sort of wiring cluster. Or maybe the bendix diode electronic unit might accualy do something for me.

The mounting hole is a standard TO-3 transistor pattern, could have been a transistor or possibly a voltage regulator (not the type used with a generator or alternator, but just something to drop voltage to a constant level such as 6 volts). The aluminum part is just a heat sink. It's neat looking, the S looks sorta like the Standard Ignition logo. Maybe.

The numbers off the electronic doohicky might help.

There is some writing on a ceramic ballast with the wire cluster. It has20 L B 8 SRECO printed on it. No more printing anywhere else.

Pictures of the rest of it would sure help someone figure out what it might be, if they haven't seen one before.

Basicaly the wire cluster and solid state board is screwed in the back of the finned aluminum housing. not much to see. I have no clue what would connect to the 4 wire harness after leaving the housing

if you take a couple close up pics of the electronics, maybe someone who understands electronics could figure out what it might do. Some people actually understand that kind of black magic

Here are some shots of the electrical that would be tucked inside the finned housing with the harness.

neato, I have no idea. There are a few more parts hiding on the other side of the PC board, eh?

The Bendix part is a transistor, since it has a 2Nxxx part number. The date code is the number at the bottom, 65xx ?? The first two digits are the year, last two are the week.

Thanks for the pics, interesting stuff there. Sorry I don't have the answer yet.

Emergency transmission accessory shift activator. I've heard of one of these but never seen one in person. The diode means it will work on a nash metropolitan also but only if it is equipped with an allison automatic. Lippy

That will be cool until some guy comes along and recognizes it as part of a 1966 Waring blender.:D:D

I was also thinking it might be a rev limiter. Any thoughts?
