so heres my deal i went to look at a 1957 rearend today, but it wasnt a 57, but i ended up with a 9in rearend that is 59 inches from backing plate to backing plate, im debating on using it under a 30 coupe with stock model A wire wheels, what im wondering is do you think its too wide with using those wheels (no fenders)? or if anyone has a picture of something similar id like to see
What do you want a picture of? Mock it up and see if you like it. I sound like a broken record, but set the car at the ride height you want, set the wheels where you want them, measure between them and that's the width you want. I think, pretty sure, that if you use stock wires, you need a "ring" or adapter to support the rims like they were supported on stock drums. And you'll have to re-drill axles, or get new axles, or adapters. Ford made the 9 inch in 1957, how do you know that's not what you got?
Ideal is around 56-57 inches wheel to wheel. Measuring between the backing plates is irrelevant. Ford had something like 3or4 different backing plates, axle stickouts, and shoe sizes and offsets measuring the backing plates can lead you off in the wrong direction. Chris
sounds crazy but i dont have the car to mock up with at the moment, im currently paying payments on a 30 coupe from a old guy ive met, and the deal is it stays there til i finish paying for it. the lug pattern is right but it will need those adapters to make the wheels actually fit. im just trying to get everything ready so im trying to pre plan, id hate to be a sitting duck while paying for it
There is no "ideal". There are way too many variables. Rims, tires, backspace, offset, adapters, fenders, no fenders, low boy, hi boy, style, period on and on. The only way to know for sure is to mock up, or copy an existing known set-up. So to the OP, find a car that has EXACTLY what you want, and see if you can get the info from the owner. Good Luck.
haha thanks, im doing a hi boy myself so hopefully itll work with the wheel spacing, when i get a chance im gonna go do some measuring on the car
These guys are giving you good advice here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=618889&showall=1 Why did you leave that thread? Giving you measurements, wheel sizes and everything.
