I looked at the car again while stopped for gas, and noticed some more welding on the underside of the roof. There are two full length welds from one side to another. The first is about 3" back from the windshield and the next is about a foot or so.
I'm not real sure what was accomplished by doing this, but I'm starting to think they took a bit of the crown out of the roof.
Anyone have any better ideas?
I'll take a few pictures after bit.

 

Here's the welded Seem on the front portion of the roof. Not 100% sure why it's there just yet, but I'll figure it out sooner or later

 

Wow, didnt notice the welds... I checked this prize out while at the drags, I love it. I am convinced that I will have one...I am also glad that this one is going to a good home. I cant believe that all the extra "junk" that goes with it weren't mentioned in the ads( atleaste not the ad I saw)

I didn't notice the welds either, but with that roof in the rearview for 17 hours, It was hard not to notice how little crown the roof had... I had to stop and inspect! I also couldn't believe that all that stuff was included..and not mentioned in the add! I Couldn't get him the money fast enough

Killer find man,something special about finding an old custom. Congrats on this great score!!!! A 40 merc that was done back in the day is something special,especially with a Cad engine. Have fun !!!!!!

 

That was one hell of a trip! We made it back last night with no problems at all. It was great picking up the 40 and heading to the drags. I looked over at Jeremy many times on the ride and could see the wheels turning. If anyone can make this a "majestic" ride...Jeremy can (LOL inside story). Congrats on picking this thing up...it gonna be awesome!

Best Road Trip Ever!!! THe Merc (aka "The Merkin") is awesome and is going to be incredible. I bet that Jeremy blows people away with this things and if you know Jeremy you know he's a Metal Wizard in his own right and this things is almost too nice for him. I mean it's solid so where's the challenge for him.....we all know he can chop it but the fact that it's all there makes it a snap!!!

I had a shit ton of fun and have a ton of pics to load.

Channeling the body and decrowing the roof sure took the ugly out of the stock '40 Merc...looks nice! It would be a hard call to chop it or leave it alone...

 

WOW great comparison, they definitely took some crown out, i'll get a few pictures of the back glass also... its way different than stock.
i need to get the car unloaded and really dig in, find all the welds, and really document whats been done.

i think its a 46-48 chassis, the tank is the same as my old 47, and the front end has the stepped wishbones. the rearend has been set up with parallel leafs..its much too far foward...and is installed very porely.
it will go back on a 39-40 chassis with transvers springs.

that roof is better, but the overall of the car is still missing something. aside from the wheel base,the 4x4 stance and the missing metal in random places
it still needs something!
