More and more I've begun to notice that the cars in the best condition...that us H.A.M.B.ers would kill for are going to total dipholes with no talent or respect for the car at hand. To each their own but daaaang, you've gotta draw the line somewhere. Whether it be a cherry 31 coupe hacked into a drag car out of spite or an all original one granted to a total idiot by some form of 'tard magic. It makes me sick to my stomach. Take my rough car if all you will do is defile a near perfect car that I could really refine into a beautiful traditional hot rod.

Ok, Im done ranting now. I feel the weights have been lifted

because like

cheap, fast, good . Pick any 2

Money, Talent, Taste. Pick any 2

You rarly see all 3 together.

3. Inhale......ok now exhale....... Haha

I know what you're talkin about...sux

4. Like 41 Willy's Pickups for instance...

5. Because the guys with the skills still think it's 1972 and don't even want to pay what the car will bring across the scale for scrap?

Which, incidentally, is up to $318 a ton locally if you pull the tires.

I mean, I found a '51 Merc coupe in a local yard a while back. Rough, but it could have been built, especially if you wanted to drop it on a later chassis and floors and go that route. Without a motor or trans it probably brought $400 going in, if that, that place pays less. I think it's the same car I saw on CL a while back, complete, for like $1500. Something ain't right if no one's buying that.

ford9inch, you're absolutely right. Story #1. Here in town, a couple bought a new 56 Chevy Nomad and drove it for years ( it had a three on the tree to boot). When the guy passed away, his wife was a teacher and drove it for a few more years, then gave the car to her grandson, who promptly took it apart, lost interest and walked away. They sold it after that, minus the stuff that was stolen/lost.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Story #2: A guy has a 56 Chevy convertible stored outdoors in a local storage year. It's a two tone blue. The top is a skeleton. Every year I watch more parts disappear. Last year it was the tail lights. He won't sell it, or even let the car club store it indoors. He's going to restore it "someday".

My rant wasn't about jealousy, I am jealous and will admit it. It's just a shame to see cars in such good shape nearly destroyed.

If more people put as much effort into their cars as they do whining about what others do, they'd get so much more done!

It's gonna happen. So what? Grab a wrench.

There are plenty of those cherry (or fully restored) early Fords on CL or eBay ... all you have to do is step up and buy them all. Then you can turn them all into beautiful traditional hot rods.

Yep, that's what you should do!!

The talented builder's aren't scared of a project in tough shape. In fact, they may be interested in the challenge. Many still have "why pay four grand for that nice body when I can straighten out the 'ol field car in a few weeks"?
The dirt bags have no such talent, so they must spend the spare cash they have from selling weed on something they can manage.

The comparison to women is interesting, but maybe opposite - the super hotties are usually works in progress, while the plain gals make great reliable daily drivers.

It's all pretty true around here too, sadly. I've asked more people than I care to number if they'd want to sell their "project" cars to me. No, of course not, they'd rather let it rot in the yard for the next eternity. I used to go through (as in build/restore at least 2-3 cars/trucks per year a few years back). I'll admit that I like to hang on to cool old school things, but if someone comes along that I know is going to either restore it or keep it running; I'll part with it if it won't kill me.
The weird thing is, people will sometimes part with it if you give them a small fortune, but then again, not many people have a fortune to give...

It happens once in a while there are the women with both qualities... I'll take one in the middle somewhere please. ;) A nice daily driver would end up being a super hottie to me I think. :)

It's an old rule/suggestion that has perhaps been lost on the current crop of car crafters but I was taught to always start with the best offering you can find/afford when starting a project. NOTHING, says you have to have a complete piece of crap to build a hot rod. Some of the best cars from back in the day were perfect and stock when they were converted to rods............why does that have to change if a pristine example of your favorite marque appears just as your planning your dream build. A lot of examples are worth more today as well built hot rods than they would ever be worth as stockers.
Along the same line I see this bunch of hot rodders (HAMB members) chime in when someone shows up with a really good car that it's too nice to cut up, you should restore it. BULLSHIT!!! Almost every car you can imagine has already got thousands of restored examples already lanquishing in some old farts garage waiting for his kids/grandkids to get their hands on the day after he gets dirt shoveled on his coffin and sell to first person through the door with a fist full of cash. What I do hate is some no talent first timer taking a really good car and cuting it up to the point it can't be used for anything but a rat rod.

24. I am probably mistaken but I alwasy kind of thought that drag cars are traditional, maybe if one gets hacked into a salter first then turned into a drag car that is OK?

But to the meat of your question I must ask another question, does it make you jealous that the average moron has more money than you do?

My experience in life is that he who has the most money the overwhelming majority of the time gets the best stuff to work with. I have always had to work with what I have. I never really get too concerned with what someone who is not part of my estimed social standing does with their money, I have too much trouble worrying about what I am going to do with mine.

But getting back to it most of the time he with the most to spend gets the better quality stuff.

I think we ran off a couple of FNG's that got lucky with a very restorable car.. Some kid comes on and shows us some pictures of a stock '28? Ford coupe a while back.. Mind you this car only needed a little TLC to bring it back to life...
Anyway, he said he wanted to turn it into a ratrod..

29. Pretty wide abiss that separates a rat rod and a drag car.

I will admit it is a damned shame when someone takes good rod fodder and turns it into an abortion but it has been being done since the very beginning. All you can do is try to shove whomever it is onto the correct path.
