I didn't realize the ford fenders were so much wider. after studying on the jimmy summers Merc and how far his stick out, I was under the impression that mine were in much further than factory. I'm going to assume that the summers Merc had ford fenders?

I will get a few pictures from the underside this evening.
    Thanks RIK

No, the Jimmy Summers Merc had 1940 Mercury fenders.

Your rear fenders still look rather "stock" to me. But its hard to tell, since the the fenders where raised. So perhaps the fenders where tucked in a little bit. Now they are sitting higher up in the body they fit flush with the trunk, which is a bit smaller than the main body. So perhaps instead of adding material to the rear fenders they moved it inside the body to compensate for this. But this is hard to tell with these photos. Perhaps the inside shots will tell more.

    Thanks rik,
I'll get a few better quality underside pictures this evening.

I also noticed that the deck-lid has been sectioned. They removed the lower portion of the inner structure, moved it up, cut the skin and hammered the skin back over the inner structure.
If the doors are the same, I'll have to assume that this car has been sectioned.

I'd like to find the measurements on a stock Merc from the door tops to the bottom of the body
As well as the total length of the deck lid top to bottom, to figure our how much has been taken out.

I need to come over this weekend or what not and take some good pics of it so we can document what has been done and what need to be. The iPhone app is nice for well lit trip pics but blows out detail shots and is hard to get the detail.
    p
Let me know when you want me to come over and we'll document the entire car and what's been done boo.

Well if you need a stock '40 there is a super nice one on FORD BARN right now that you could get started on building for me and my fam. :D $4500!

I'm still crossing my fingers for the history of the car to show up... It's a very cool car and someone poured a lot of heart and soul into it. There has to be a record of it...

    Interesting!
On the Jimmy Summers Merc the body was not section. After the fenders where raised the stock bottom of the body was now level with the bottom of the fenders. So the fenders where raised the hight of the running boards.

It looks like this was done on your car as well. But then the bottom of the doors was cut off and welded to the front and rear quarters. But it does not look like the front and rear quarters where sectioned.... but I could be wrong.

Is it possible it was originally a convertible, and someone added a steel top to it?

The quarters may not be sectioned, I haven't cleaned the rats nests out of those areas just yet.

I just wonder why the decklid was sectioned

Possibly because the body was channeled over the frame? I assume the car is channeled.

Very interesting car! I would have a difficult time deciding what to do with it....restore it or add my own touch to it (probably the latter !)

The body is channeled, but the area below the deck lid was dropped with the car as well. Unless I'm mistaken I think all that would move together.. Unless they raised the tail pan?

Unless I find some real significant custom car history, I will more than likely make a few changes

I looked at the rear fenders this evening. At the very least, they cut the lip off of the fenders befor welding them to the quarters. [IMG]

My Buddie Kevin, flatfoot here on the hamb did some digging and found the gentleman that owned the car in the early 60's. He was also the guy that Is responsible for how the car looks now. He was turning the car into a drag car.
He told me the car had a hopped up flathead when he first bought it (off of whom he couldn't remember) and he pulled that out to make way for a big block chevy......
He cut the firewall,x member and wheel openings and then let the car sit in his garage for years.

Hopefully he can dig up the pictures that he has of the car. I would really love to see what it used to look like!

Thanks again flatfoot for digging up his contact info.

    Hey,

    Whata killer kustom!

The roof clip kinda says Mopar from '49-'51, maybe Plymouth sedan?

I'g go with a flattie or early caddy, no sbc, lower it, paint it "Dartmoth Green'', a '39 Ford colour & drive the wheels off it!
