    WOW!

Never seen such good quality pics of deck operations and the Devastators in formation............. Wow!

And I was all set to comment on how the Napier W led directly to some of the most powerful engines of WWII (Napier-Saber H from the Tempest!!).

More great pix, RoadKill! Love to know the back story on this cool Henry J pic.
Only in the car-hungry post-WWII era could the K-F phenomenon have happened,
IMO. It could only have happened with Henry K's deep pockets and Joe Frazer's
long decades of car savvy, though. Too bad Henry wouldn't listen to Joe:confused:, and re-
sulting judgement errors doomed a company that, initially, was wildly successful!
I'll ALWAYS wish that Preston Tucker had had half the resources available. I still
believe his dream car would have worked out fine, once regular production could
    have been reached.:(

Thanks, SWI! From a virtual orphan:( to one
of the most photographed human beings in
history. Norma Jean didn't do too badly, did
    she? :)

Hey, Doc, RED meant ORDNANCE back then, same as NOW?
And I agree with you on the sharp color pix. :D As much as I love
B&W for its qualities, COLOR really brought WWII to life and
made us feel almost as if we were THERE:eek:, onboard ship, in the
battlefields, etc. I only wish there were more color shots from
The Great War which, sadly, comes off as static, almost life-
less:( in many of the photos (Even Frank Hurley had trouble cap-
turing the action and horror of that war.)

Poor Packard. The sales motto should have been, "V-8, A Year Too Late!" :(

  9. I saw an "ORDY" at the BX and he was wearing a red shirt that said... "If you see me running... try to keep up!"

Ten buddies, sure having a blast just toolin' around. :D This might
be called a r--rod, hooptie or just POS nowadays:eek:, but back when
I was a kid, this is what we'd have called a JALOPY or even HEEP.
Not really fast, just a contrapted alternative to shoe leather!:) Sort
of like what Walter Denton drove in "Our Miss Brooks" on TV!

ANY HINTS whether this is pre-war VS. post-war?:confused:

I have spent a lot of time looking at these three pictures. There was a chance that one of the guys was my uncle (too old to be my dad) I am trying to determine if the shots where of the North High football field or East because I think that they moved the football fields when highway 235 was run through town. Good chance it that I know (or knew) somebody in that car.

Grimes is just a bedroom community of Des Moines. I work in DSM, family is all from there, born there, wife and all her family born there. Lots of gear heads in the family! I need to show the photo to a few guys.

This was on the occasion of the 1935 24-hour record attempt on the salt flats. The abrasive salt surface played havoc with the tyres but at their third attempt they clinched the record at 137.4 mph. Twenty further records were also taken including 157.7mph for the hour!
Back in Britain at the Brooklands track a new outright track record of 143.44 mph was set and never bettered.

24 litres, 500bhp, single triple choke carb, 3-speed box, brakes - hydraulic discs REAR only!

These shots came from a panorama shot and could be put together again but I blew it up for the detail. And another bike shot to boot

Hate to think how many are gone for good.

Red shirts were also worn by the repair parties ( firefighters ) on the flight deck and hangar deck. I was in Repair 1 66-68.
My memory isn't what it once was, but I thought V-4 ( fueling division) on the helicopter carrier I was on during the Vietnam era, wore red shits too. The red shits in these pictures are standing next to hoses, like the plane is being refueled.

I am not into motorcycles but these panoramic shots are fantastic.
This is an early Annual Gypsy Tours at Turkey Run State Park. Wonder if any of these guys were at the first sturgis?

    And a couple misc. shots
