well, thats most likely a 16 inch wheel, just scale the photo and you have your answer..haha. On the subject of fade aways. Was there ever a tech on how its done...I know it looks straight forward, but Im sure theres a million little things Im not thinking of... I always love looking through this thread as I want to someday build a custom inspired form this era...
I would think it like a 5" chop. Most of the time back then they didnt do many over 5". It was rare to see a car with a really extreme amount taken out of it.
Aaron, I agree with you about the name of the thread. On post# 93 I mentioned something about the name because I didnt really think the name matched the thread.Well thats ok since the thread has turned out to be so damn good.
Since it is so easy now to research material. There is still a lot a people who just screw up cars. Like i lost my way with my 51chevy. I bagged it and mustang II it. Now im in the process of at least taking the bags out and giving it a real stance. Thanks to Jeff and his beautiful mercury. The great thing about this thread for me is all the old photos. Now i know what im going to do with my 1941 chevy. Its pushed me to make it as period as i can make it. Still thinking of either going to chop it ( hardtop ) or turn it into a carson top. I have done a lot of research on 41 chevy's and you dont see many as true customs now a days. they mostly are gassers ( insert vomit noises ). So looking threw here i have found so much inspiration. Also the reason its mostly old photos is cause not very many people are building period correct 40's style customs. If it was for modern day photos of period correct customs then this threat would most likely be like 2 pages and fizzle out. The ways you guys ( The Choppers ) have gone about building your cars has always blown me away. Now i feel im on a mission to try to teach other guys about the history of custom cars. well up to like 1956. I couldnt get into they style past then. I try to get younger guys not to bag there cars now. Some say " Well you 51 is bagged." I tell them that "i regret it and thats why there coming out." I have gotten a few guys really stoked on the they ways cars use to be build. Hopefully more people will start to build there cars like the old days.
This is real nice right here, any info on this Buick ? Oh Bickford thanks for that earlier compliment on your last post.
Thats a cool looking car!! The hubcaps almost look like 53 Studebaker. Maybe there not just cant really tell. It also looks like it has a fade-away going on there. Jeff your welcome!
Ya man,the hubcaps look good on the car.Dont forget the fade-away fenders were stock on these cars. When they came out they were called " Airfoil" front fenders.I think most Buicks had the fade-aways except for Buick Specials and I think Buick Limited's but I could be wrong. That is one of the features that make these cars so special.
FWIW, I chose that name to match the similarly themed Hot Rod thread that had already been started. So take it up with that guy.
well today Iam going to sink the plate on the 41 merc, like westergard did it. will try to put pic's up when its done. oh ya back to the top
do a tech thread. The ones Ive seen, it looks like they cut it out and made tabs and folded it over..
Wow that's awesome Chris!! Please tell us more about its story. Seems like it has been restyled further since 1951. What plans do you have for it?
Thanks guys. The guy I got it from bought it in the late 40's, and looking at the license plate it was customized in 1951 (I appologize as it is not techincally 40's). It never made it back on the road. If I were to finish it, I would build it much like the sectioned pics...however I do not think I am going to be able to keep it. My daily driver just blew a head gasket!!! Neat car regardless, it has a stock frame with a 37-40 front axle, hydraulic brakes, side shift trans, had (no longer in it) a plated 40 Ford dash and a Crestliner steering wheel. Engine was stock.
just wanted to see how people feel about this chevy. im thinking of coping it. i really like the chop on it. i like how they cut the rear window down. the only thing i would do different is move the rear window down and make it the same hight as the side windows.
hay Bickford the rear window is curved on 41-48 chevys ( you know that) making it a hard one to cut down somthing to think about. i have 2 roofs from 41 chevy coupes if you need anything.
Jeez Chris, save some cool iron for the rest of us would ya? Cool stuff, can't wait to see what you do with this one.
MKILGER Ya I know its curved i'm looking in to the new class for it. Hoping its now laminated. If not might have to either sink it in, put it regular in it or was thinking of converting it to a hard top. I know what ever way i got its gonna be a pain in the ass, but thats what makes it fun. Trying to figure out how to make it work the right way. Thanks i'll keep that in mind about the roofs.
Go for it ! Thats a sweet car, if they make new glass it will be cutable laminated stuff...the orig car prolly had a plexi one made for it back then.
I think rear part of the roof isn't flowing so well. I wouldn't copy this. For the cutting glass you could possibly use some old windshield with the right radius.
