Quiet Glass Packs....Anyone make such an item?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 2many projects, Sep 1, 2011.

  1. My SBC powered Model A has 24" long polished stainless chambered pipes mounted near the rear.
Cost too much, looks awesome and sounds deafening.
    They've got to go.
I'm working with limited space so bullet shaped gl*** packs might fit well enough and hopefully quell some of the thunder.
I know what your thinking.............The guy drives a hot rod and he whines that his pipes are too LOUD ???
    Must be getting too old.
Anyone have any luck with a quiet gl*** pack? Is there such a thing?

Not that I ever seen unless you get a pair that are 6' long! Check out some of the lowrider mufflers, they are small, thin, and not too loud. I don't know how the backpressure would hurt you but why not try a stock set of Harley mufflers? They are not too loud, chrome, and dirt cheap because every biker swaps out his stock mufflers! (I have three sets myself!)

  4. I've got two 22" Smithys on my AV8, and they're quiet. In fact my wife's Miata is louder!

I got some gl*** packs called purple hornies on my 55 chevy, they are made by flotech. They are quiet when your cruising and loud when you drop the hammer. Napa sells them for 20 bucks a peice and they hold up for a long time.

The cheapie muffler shop standard, Blue Streak, really mellow, cheap and come in a bunch of different lengths and sizes.

  13. Are those Magnaflow's quiet?
They seem like a well made muffler but I've never heard them.
Jeg's sells Dynomax for resonable money. Any good??

not at all man, you can be loud and Leary, or you can be quiet and cl***y. Or you could do what I did, fit a set of polished stainless steel Porters and have the best of both. When you mash the loud pedal hard, they bark like a junkyard dog and put a huge grin on your face as you accelerate, but when you back off the pedal at cruising or highway speeds they settle down to a real nice mellow rumble. They also burble very sedately at idle. Top quality, I'll never use anything else. Get in touch with Porterman on here and explain your requirements. You won't be sorry.
    Best of luck

I just made a set of sidepipes for my 34. It has a 392 Hemi. I had some Car Chemistry shorty mufflers on it, rite at the headers.. Too loud. I picked up a set of AP Exhaust 30" gl***packs. American made. They sound good.

I have a '51 Fleetline(avatar) , sbc / pg...I was gonna use Porters , but , my exhaust guy told me that it wasn't the type of muffler as much as it was the placement of the muffler ,He used "THRUSH CHERRY BOMBS" on my car , he told me that the closer you get the mufflers to the engine , the more travel the exhaust has to go after the muffler thru till it gets to the tailpipe , hence making the exhaust more "deep" and "bubbly" , you'll have to excuse my car , she's a little cold natured , but , you'll get the idea... BTW , these mufflers are less than $20 a piece , and sound as good , if not better than Porters or Smithy's ,IMHO...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42_c****2nk

This thread is perfectly timed for me. I spoke with Porter (Dave) today and ordered up my new mufflers. Big plus, Porter is an Alliance vendor. Thanks for helping support the HAMB. Stu

I put medium length Cherry Bombs behind my 331 hemi. Can barely hear it. I think they're too quiet, hope the gl*** blows out soon!

  23. Looks like we got some good feedback on this thread.
Anyone heard of the SS409 stainless split chamber muffler the are made by a guy in South Africa?
Ther're distributed thru Lou's Kustom Exhaust here in M***atwo****s and New Hampster.

Someone else posted the Flow Pro baffle packs, and I have to agree.

I have a pair that are going on my RPU and have used them for years on lots of other vehicles.

They have a nice mellow tone and are way better than any gl***pack or any other pack style muffler.

And they stay consistent in their performance as they have no gl*** to burn out.

The short body length ones will naturally be louder, but you can get them in a longer length too.

My son had a pair with duals out to the rear on his 71 GMC and it sounded downright ***y with a relatively stock 305.

Had lots of comments on how nice it sounded.

Another vote for Porters. Nice and deep toned and only get loud if you put your foot in it.

x2 on the 30" Smithy's. I have them under my '40 ford pickup, which is running a 283. Very nice, deep rumble, but doesnt resonate on the highway. Matter of fact, they sound great to my ear at 25-45ish mph, not loud, just "hot rod" as they should, but at freeway speed the windnoise of my cab is louder than the exhaust. Real nice for those long roadtrips to car shows. They're cheap, authentic, and in my book do the job perfectly.

"Quiet gl*** packs"; that's an oxy*****. But, we had 36" long Cherry Bombs, with full exhaust, put on my nephews 51 Chevrolet Business Coupe; 1996 LT1 police car exhaust manifolds (almost cast iron headers), long header pipes, the 36 " Cherry Bombs, and tailpipes to the bumper. IT sounds GOOD! Not loud, really deep and throaty, and "rap" when you rev it. He's happy, I'm happy, everyone says it sounds good. Butch/56sedandelivery.

  28. hey guy with the too loud gl***packs.. Whats inside them??? theres got to be louveres to deaden the noise and packing

gl*** packs with the little holes and no restriction inside are gonna be way loud

I used to put them on backwards so the openings for the louvers were facing the exhaust flow, especially for kids gonna get in trouble!!!

  29. The polished stainless chambered mufflers I'm currently running are 24 inches long and have directional louvers in a straight pattern, not spiral, with no packing.
As I mentioned earlier they're silly loud.
On a ten scale, 10 being the loudest these are an 8.
They're too much for my ear drums.
That kind of music was the nuts when I was 23 years old but I've matured and I have many neighbors who I really like.
It's also nice to speak to my p***enger without shouting and saying "WHAT?" all the time.
The resonance of these pipes distorts every word out of someones mouth at cruise speeds. At 'foot to the front bumper' and balls out its awesome but ....ticket bait.
I want to tone it down but there's not much room under there for anything too large.
I was thinking ..............big gl*** packs??

Agreed. These come in steel or gl*** packing. The gl*** will be the quieter of the the two options. I have the steel packing on my SBC 400 powered coupe. To me they are perfect but probably would not be considered quite but not obnoxiously loud either.
