Do ricers count? I owned a 1985 Nissan 300ZX with a turbocharged V6 and a 5 speed a few years ago when I lived in San Diego. It's straight and flat in the desert on I-15 between LA and Vegas and I got it up to 135. It would have gone faster but I wimped out because it didn't have the greatest tires on it. I had an '84 Trans Am that I got up to 130 once but 135 in the ZX was the fastest I've ever driven a car....
1970 Dodge Challenger RT 383, if one believes the 150MPH speedometer in those things then I saw mine pass 140 on a straight stretch of road along a levey in NOLA...1981 I do miss that car
140 in my '58 Corvette, 270 hp, and the dyno said the speedo was very close. 211.004 on El Mirage dry lake in a D/gas lakester, 304 cubic inches.
140 in my brothers 99' Mustang GT (still had more) 115 in my 83' K10 Suburban diesel (still had more) 105 in my moms 04' BMW 325I (still had more) 101 in my 84' K10 diesel (still had more) 95 in my grandma's 00' VW Jetta TDI ( almost topped out) 87 in my old 86 VW Jetta Diesel (topped out) 86 in my 88 V10 Suburban (had no more power, like driving a wet dishrag) Most everything else I've driven had hit 85, so no big deal there.
I got this up to 55 M.P.H. once coming home from Lobethal. 10 H.P. with my lard arse in it. Now thats quick!
120 and still pulling in my 66 Imperial Topped out around 91 in my MG Midget 73 on a Puch Maxi moped about 100 on my '77 CB400
Been a touch under 180 (186 indicated) on an '07 Suzuki GSXR 1000. Rev limiter in 5th gear..... Never again, my ricebike days are over. As for 4 wheels, I've been 7.65 @ 176MPH in my old man's RED. My own personal car has seen 132 before on the track, and probably something close to that on a public road.
I got the rare opportunity to open up my O/T daily driven (not stock) '95 Impala SS on the 210 FWY with (seriously) no one on it for miles! It was about 1 or 2 A.M. on a Monday morning about a couple years ago, there was a bad accident and they had the FWY shut in both directions and the CHP were directing what little traffic off the FWY and I had to get on at the next on-ramp... Well when I was getting back on the FWY, I noticed there was nobody behind me, or in front of me for as far as I can see, and I thought to myself every CHP on duty was at the scene of the accident, so I better take advantage of the rare opportunity in So. Cal while I could.... Before I knew it, I was doing 145 MPH and the car kept pulling. I let off because my G/F was with me and she was starting to get a little scared... Plus my front end started feeling light in a 4000+ LB. car! After going that fast doing the speed limit feels like slow motion and soo quiet...
My 78 ford is horrible goin down the interstate, The steering box is so worn out i can do one complete revolution of the steering wheel both ways before it starts to turn the wheels, but i hit a top speed of 75 mph, TALK ABOUT SCARY AS HELL!!!
1972 , IN a new Cyclone GT on bias tires we went 155 on a two lane road. Yeah we where stupid kids , but we lived.

I was in my 20s,Driving the Stude in my avatar(which is in the garage as I type) The ride height was a couple inches higher than it is now.The motor was a genuine 1967 302 chevy,Duntov 30-30 cam,4-speed and 308 geared Olds rear.I was stopped by State Trooper 2600 rpm was 66 mph by his radar.Well, some time later I was racing a late model trans am,when I finally got that sucker rollin (302 with a 308 gear...)I passed that Trans Am at 6600 rpm whatever that mph was I would like to know! I was on an old 2 lane blacktop and that old coupe was starting to get light at 6600 rpm,and about the time I was pulling back in around the Pontiac,I remembered I had Farm and Fleet Duralons on the front mounted on those skinny slots, they were a volkswagon tire...If one of those had blown at speed,we would have wadded that coupe up and would still been tumbling thru that cornfield! hahaha That was back in the eighties...Can someone tell me what mph I was running at 6600? I sure would like to know after all these years! I figgered around 148 mph....anyone?
Oh and thats just the fastest I have been in my coupe.I went 9.32@150+ drivin a buddies supergas car.
Got caught cruising at 114mph in a late model Impala rental car in Indiana. Officer was pretty cool after a brief scolding. He got amused when I handed him my NHRA competion license. Had to make a court appearance and pay fines, that move cost me around $600.00 My fastest ride was 178 in my blown alcohol fiat altered
Thats kinda what I thought, and that motor made power till 8000 rpm! If I shifted at anything but 8000 on the dragstrip,it slowed down.I am no math guy but I figgered 148-150 mph.Any other good guesses or math guys care to answer?
How about a boat? Non traditional but a ride in a 36 foot Scarab powered by two blown Big block Chevys, about 80 mph from 1200 total HP.Not fast by vehicle standards but two big blocks running wide open at 5000 rpm for ten minutes is quite impressive.
150mph on my Ducati 848, I got scared to go any faster, and it was at night on a freeway so I was tripping on cops seeing me.
My father went 180 in a competition 427 REAL cobra and 145 in his k-code 1965 mustang and the fastest I have ever gone was 125 in a 2010 shelby gt500 my dad was driving but i was in the car.
Most who have gone over 150 can possibly agree that anything slower than 100 just feels like putting along... After my 172 night 80 felt like 20.... Its kinda amazing how your mind can accererate with your ground speed .... UNSURPASSED RUSH...
178.4 on a top fuel Harley at the Gulfport Memorial Day Blowout in 97. 147 Timed, in the 80's on a Kawasaki 900 on a closed road out of Barnwell S.C. agains't all the wannabe stock car racers that swore their cars would do 160. Bet was that when they topped out I would pass them. Made a lot of money that way. On 4 wheels I have no idea, never had a spedo that was really true, but fast ebough to make me want to slow down. And I don't know about the rest of you but I find that I can't seem to get into going to fast when someone else is driving, just scares the s..t outta me.
You want scary- I've been 95mph in two different motorhomes. I didn't stop at 95mph, they both were completely topped out, and it takes a longggg time to hit top speed in a motorhome. Don't believe me? TRY IT! I find as you get closer to 150mph in older cars there is one thing that you notice, aside from floating front ends and white knuckles.... THE BRAKES! I was in a 1969 Dodge Charger with 2.76 gears and a realllly stout 440, wound to the boards, when a car pulled on the road wayyy up in the distance ahead of us. We hit the brakes and the car slowed down what seemed like forever- we STILL almost hit the car that turned on. It took forever to slow down! I've been well over 100mph in many cars, dozens and dozens. The NEW stuff it isn't even hard. My wife's Magnum R/T hits it's 126mph speed limiter so easily it's not funny, and it sure doesn't feel like a fast speed, it's all comfort and rock steady.
I agree. I read the thread and think some of the replies are a little optomistic. Old speedos are so inaccurate it isn't funny, and embellishments of course, but most 60s cars had no chance of 150mph speeds........ My high speed run in that Charger had me constantly thinking about the tires on the car, I barely thought about anything other than the tires, and if they were going to blow. Wasn't fun! lol
