    Description

    Portland's Union Station on St. John Street on the day of the last run of regular steam engine operations on the Maine Central Railroad. The locomotive, the 470, was later put on display in Waterville. First opened on June 25, 1888, Union Station was demolished on August 31, 1961.

    The car is a 26-27 Model T Ford.

    What you're looking at is often called a "Bennett Buggy" in Canada and sometimes a "Hoover wagon" in the US, each name being because of who was in power at the time in both countries while they were both in economic downturns.

    These conversions came about due to people not being able to afford to fuel and service their cars during the great depression , gas prices increased greatly as did gas taxes to try to create revenue in the government. Most of these conversions were seen in the prairie regions of Canada and the US where there was less money and having horses was part of daily life still.

    imagine this, but I did NOT know it was so wide spread.:eek: Awe-
