What a great weekend I am having! For those who live in far away lands you should know this is a holiday weekend here in the United States with Monday being "Labor Day" and is generally considered to be the last hurrah of summer in the Midwest.

My weekend got started on Friday morning as me and my nephew Travisfromkansas left our hometown and headed east along the two lane blacktop highway on our way to Kansas City, KS which is about a 3 hour drive from here. Travis was driving his Galaxie hardtop and I was following in my late model Ranger pickup with my 2 wheel trailer in tow. It was VERY hot and would reach 103 that day.

We soon passed thru the town of Herington, KS where I spotted my old buddy Robert's Model A coupe parked downtown at a coffee shop. I remember selling him a replacement rear end for this car a couple years ago.

We continued east and the scenery was rambling hills and gentle curves thru the pasture lands of the bluestem prairie, some of the largest remaining native grass lands in the country. The grass was tall, the cattle were fat, and the ponds still held plenty of water. Remarkable facts considering the MANY days of temperatures over 100 degrees in KS this summer.

First stop was Lawrence, KS where we met up with our pal blacktopbuddha (Bill) for lunch at a Mexican restaurant he picked out for us. He arrived with his very pretty 2 year old daughter Iris.

The food was fantastic and the conversation was light hearted and good natured. Bill brought a book to me that I had won at the recent Hamb Drags silent auction. This was my "lite" lunch.

Then it was time to continue our journey and tell Bill and Iris goodbye. Here are photos of me with them plus Travis and his car.

At this point we went our separate ways with Travis going to Good Guys show and I was on a mission to buy an engine.

Damn, I thought that was Travis' Galaxie but I wasn't sure. Wish I'd have flagged him down and said hello.

I was lucky enough to find a sweet deal on a 53 Caddy 331 cubic inch engine and tranny at a body shop in the south part of metro KC Missouri area.

Later Friday evening I met up with my Cornhusker friends from Lincoln, Nebraska for supper. Meeting me at Lone Star Steakhouse near the race track where they had just attended the Good Guys show was Jim, Gasserlouie, Frank and Cindy.

Then after we got outside in the horrible heat it occurred to me that we hadn't had any frozen custard yet that day......it was a problem that was easily solved thanks to a nearby custard stand.......my choice was a butterscotch "concrete" and thank you goes to my banker friend Frank for buying it for me.:)
And notice the custard machine that cranks this stuff out ----
it flows down the gentle slope like manna from the Gods.......yum.....

I also want to educate young children that in order to grow your bones strong and sturdy you need to eat plenty of dairy products just like Gasserlouie.....

So Friday evening it was time to arrive at my hotel room at the ultra posh Argosy casino where Mrs. PF had arranged for a comped room for a couple of nights in a huge suite overlooking the swift moving Missouri river. The room was complete with a 60 inch flat screen tv and had a giant glass enclosed shower with like 3-4 shower heads in it or something.....;)

Saturday morning my group of friends that were all staying at the same place left early and headed over to the Good Guys show. I hung around and killed some time and waited for the noon opening of the Greaserama show where I went alone.....

Not having eaten anything in the last couple of hours I realized I should have some BBQ while in KC so I quickly found a place near the show named Rosedale's that has been in business since 1934 according to the sign. I went inside and ordered the special of the day which was rib tips with fries......and I did not like it very much to be honest. It was boiled and not smoked and the sauce was vinegar based and the meat was tough. Oh well...win some, lose some I always say.

So just a few blocks away and I was at the Boulevard Drive Inn movie theater and it was time to open the gate and let the show begin. I parked in the yard of a young family who lived literally 2 houses away for $5 and it was an easy walk inside with my lawn chair, cooler and camera. I found my friend KCSledz who was a vendor selling his Defiance Speed Shop goods and set up camp near him......Thank you Cody for letting me share your space.

Then I was off and running looking at cars and saying hello to my many friends....you are never alone at a car show when you have a great bunch of Hamb buddies to hang with.

As for the vehicles.....variety is the key word....:)

One of the first guys I ran into was my pal stanlow69 (Jim) from Red Oak, Iowa. The skies were threatening rain and soon the first of 7 or 8 rain showers began to flow from the heavens above. Jim and I ran to his custom Caprice (with old school hydraulics) and sat inside during shower number one. Thanks for the shelter and good conversation Jim!

and one of Ted's granddaughters who was wearing a very cool hat. I think she is the daughter of his son Shawn who is a member of the host club and event sponsor's "the Los Punk Rods"----I gave her the best hat award

Very few complaints were to be heard about the weather. Text updates from my pals over at the Good Guys show about 20 miles away revealed NO RAIN at that event. Best of all was the cooler temps that made for a relaxing time.
