Ok, I've got a Mallory Magspark dual points distributor along with a Mallory Super Mag transformer for my Cadillac 390. I need to know which terminal is which on the transformer. In the photo above, there are two terminals on the right side. I assume one is positive and one is negative. Which is which? Also, in the photo above, there is a red plastic cap on the left side that covers some threads. What is this used for???
Don, you're the bestest!!! Would you happen to know what the terminal with the red plastic cap on it is over on the left hand side??
I always thought that the single terminal on the left was the 12 volt feed and the 2 other terminals on the right were the negatives leading to the 2 different sets of points. This one has the 2 ballast resistors. As it says there are 2 primary windings in the same coil body. Am I all wet?
Mine doesn't look like the one in the old ad. But, your post would make sense seeing as how the terminal on the left has a red cap (red=positive?) and there are three terminals on the Super Mag. Here is what GMC Bubba said about wiring it... "Condensor lead goes to negative ignition coil, hot power key on off to positive side suggest using a 1.5 ohm ressitor in hot feed ..." I'm not quite sure what to do, lol. I need to find out before tomorrow though. I plan on cranking it up and doing smoky burnouts.
That other terminal was used on the Mag Spark coils which used the same casing as the Voltmaster. I don't think it was used on the Volmaster's even though it was still there. Everyone I ever saw still had the cap on it in the car. Here is what GMC Bubba said about wiring it... "Condensor lead goes to negative ignition coil, hot power key on off to positive side suggest using a 1.5 ohm ressitor in hot feed ..." Bubba is right
So, 1. Do not use the terminal on the left with the red plastic cap. 2. Terminal on right closest to firewall goes to power/key switch. 3. Terminal on right farthest from firewall goes to condenser. Does that sound right??? And thanks again!!
And if you are running points, make sure you run a ballast resistor with this coil, as suggested by Bubba
I am definitely running points. Dual points to be exact. Dumb question maybe....but would this be separate or different from the stock ignition resistor?
I didnt know a magneto transformer would work with a standard points ignition system. I think there is a differance between a magspark transformer(for points ignition) and a super mag transformer(for A magneto). Someone correct me if im wrong.
GMC Bubba set them up. I defer to his expertise, lol. I am retard. Which is why I have many questions.
I didn't even notice that he said it was a Super mag transformer, just looked at the picture and thought Voltmaster. If indeed it is a Super Mag transformer, then I don't believe it will work on a points system at all.
Bubba says it will either work or it won't. He said to wire it up and check for spark. No spark and he'll make it right. He's got a box full and grabbed the wrong one to test and send out. Oh well, it happens. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I go to start it up.
It turns out that mine is a 6 V coil and the single terminal has ignition switch cast into the body right below it. You can see it in the catalog picture. I guess I am all wet on the 12V model.
OK, so the Super Mag made spark and fired the engine. So is the required ballast resistor (for the Super Mag) the same or different than my stock ignition resistor ('55 chevy factory resistor)?????
