That was your first mistake.

Watch for their weekly flier, they usually have a 40-50% off coupon.

  4. A few years ago, I bought a '55 Nomad 3 in 1 model kit from the late 60's - early 70's. It's unbuilt and everything is there, including decals. Price? $5.
Screw stores, look elsewhere, there's deals out there.

we bought a warehouse distributor back in 2000. shipped pallets of models all over the world. when I got down to 1000 kits left we stacked in a corner of the warehouse. I have been waiting for them to make a comeback. guess they are ripe ! I will be posting some vintage discontinued "Casper" models of the undertaker soon. Cadillac Dave

  6. Still goin'? Ha! In the original thread,it was for poster board= for templates! Don't have time for plasic models unless i'm home sick, and usually when I am,I'm knocked on my ass!

And,a 30pk is $20.02 out the door. Yes,I piss it away, but I have a good time working on my car while doing so!

And reason for the OG post was- In my "time" they were between 3-5 bucks...and I had to beg to get one,but if it shut me up for a few hours, all was good....I know the coupons reduce 1/2 off.... but geeze! Times have indeed changed!

I hear ya man.. Crazy prices on kits these days.. I was just going through a couple boxes of unbuilts that still have the $5.99 sticker from Kmart... Remember when all big box stores sold models.. Those were the good days.. Not anymore...

  12. Here is a real kick in the sack.....Last year we started doing Hot Wheels Drag Racing at a couple of local events for the kids. First prize was a very cool '32 roadster kit. The kid that won was about 10 or 11. When we handed him the prize he looked at it and said what do I do with it........we were blown away.

$2 for the good models... $1 for the snap-tite... I had to be real good to ask for a $2 model on trips to K-mart

Another reason for the escalation in model kit prices is product licensing. If it's a model of a Ford, the model company has to pay Ford for the use of their trademark, logo's on the car, even the shape of the body. If the kit has Goodyear tires in it, Goodyear gets a piece of the action.

A NASCAR kit is even worse. Not only Ford then but NASCAR, and most of the sponsor logos all have to get paid.

Is anybody modding the 1/25 or 1/18 "collectable" die cast cars?

Did you REALLY have to do that? This was a stupid thread 9 months ago and it hasn't improved with age.

And people wonder why Kids don't build model cars today. Not everybody can afford the cost.

  23. Hobby Lobby has them 30% off every so often and has a 40% off coupon every other week. Even Michael's Crafts has a coupon like that every week. That brings you back down to around $14. Which is about what I sell them for at shows and swaps, unless they're particularly rare or old.

Which, hey, I remember when they were $5 too, but that was in 1985, gas was a lot less then too.

I'd like to ask all you whiners how much you were earning 15-20 yrs ago when model prices were "cheap". Prices have gone up, but so has income - although not as fast as the taxes on that income.

We have those stores here. They are the most expensive places to buy models I have ever seen. Cheaper on line, at the local hobby shop, everywhere else I've looked.

Picked up a 2004 AMT '58 Impala kit at the local Goodwill for $2.50... first time I've ever found one at a thrift store.
