    Terd,

The pcy should be more than enough to relieve the pressure in the crankcase for a low rpm street engine as long as the ring seal, valve guides, etc are good. That is of course if it is installed properly. Race engines typically run less oil ring tension, coupled with much higher rpm to create more pressure in the crankcase. So you should be more than OK there. Get your trans pan and carbs straightened out, I wanna ride tomorrow night!

The trans pan should be straightened out. I'll have to wait to run the engine again to know for sure. The battery is currently being charged. I was hoping you could help me mess with those carbs, hahaha!

But anyway, I'm going up there tonight and tomorrow to see what I can get out of them with the straight linkage. If I can't get them straight, I'll try with a progressive linkage and see what happens. I should have enough pieces between the old and new linkages to make a progressive.

The oil filter leaks are all fixed. I *think* the trans leak is fixed (pan bolts were not all exactly tight) but I'll have to crank it up again to find out for sure. I got the trickle charge going and can start it up tomorrow to check the trans leak. If its not leaking, there are no more leaks I've seen.

    Pics coming for plugs...

They still look pretty much brand new. They did have a little bit of gas smell...

those are way rich. it appears to be, i really need to see the top of the side electrode. the arc part over the center electrode. that is where you can read the lines.

also if you have not started it in a few days and they still smell like gas that is a sign of super richness.

I'll be up there tonight to help set your carbs if need be. If we need to go with progressive linkage all we need is a few collars off your other linkage.
Any idea how many cfm those carbs flow?

275 cfm. I figured we could do something with the other linkage to make it progressive if we had to. Thanks!!!

Well, it had been a day since it was started and smelled like gas. But that was my thoughts too.

Fuel pressure? What's the regulator set at? Have you measured it?

That's a good question Zman. Terd doesn't have a regulator on it but probably should knowing how temperamental strombergs are with fuel pressure. Even though they're not of the 97/48/81 variety I would bet that they still only want 2.5-3.5psi on them. Definitely could lead to some fouled plugs. I think a king of trucks needs a king of regulators.

I thought I saw a regulator in one of the pics, maybe it was just a filter, but yeah that needs to be addressed before any jetting.

Stock fuel pressure should be 4 1/2 - 5 psi though I haven't measured it. There is no regulator. What you thought you saw was probably the fuel pump.

I think cookiemonster tater is right on with too much fuel being dumped with straight linkage. I've got more linkage pieces and we will be able to make up a progressive linkage tonight and see if that fixes the bogging. If its still getting too much fuel, I'll add an adjustable regulator set to 3 psi or so. Then we'll move on to modding the carbs' jetting should it need it.

Shiiiiiiit, I'm the cute one in this boy band, I mean club. We've all got our jobs in the club. You're the real artist of the group (and the best dancer). Kinny is the bad boy. Jeremy is the boy next door. Delton is the one rumored to be gay. ****ie is our Lou Pearlman (except he is NOT a molester). And so on and et cetera.

I think Cookie said it best. Being the pretty face "might sound like a hair salon. But it don't ****ing look like one. I could tell you."

    I will, and you're right!

Tonight was one of those nights with a bunch of trial and error trying to get it to run smoothly. But this trial and error led up to the answers we were looking for. I think we're on the right path and just around the corner.

Here's a rundown. I started it earlier in the a.m. to let it idle to check to see if the leaks were fixed. It idled decently but a stronger smell of fuel and falling flat when applying throttle. Well, lo and behold, I did have an oil leak after all (the trans leak is fixed). There is a fitting on the p***enger side rear of the block halfway up with a tube that runs to around the valve cover. I'm still not exactly sure what this does, but I removed the tube for paint and forgot to put it back in. So oil is dripping out of that. So I need to know what this does and if I should leave it open, cap it or run it to something???

Tonight at shop night, Jeremy showed me how to change the straight linkage to progressive. We tried a couple of different things with the carbs. Running it off the center carb and all three together. We even tried running it without gas since it ran out and we didn't notice right away. But it was just too much fuel pressure either way. The plugs were wet and sooty black and smelled of gas. Way more than before. So wet they were, that towards the end they wouldn't fire. So I ran out and got some new plugs. Kenny went home and got a gauge and we found the stock fuel pump puts out 5 psi. Hippy Josh The Accountant found on the internet these carbs like 2 1/2 psi. Shawn brought a pressure regulator with him for just such a predicament. But we had no fittings. By the time we had figured all this out, It was 9:05 and the parts store had just closed for the night.

So we know what the carbs want and how to give it to them. If the linkage needs to be changed, its already been mocked up and easy to change. Now the bad. We pretty much killed my battery since the generator doesn't charge at idle and we've been starting it a ton (flip side is life time guarantee). And I pretty much killed my battery charger.

So I'll get fittings for the pressure regulator tomorrow and see what that does. I'll need to figure out what to do with that oil fitting on the block first. I'll start a thread for that. And maybe that will be that and all will be well.

I think you definitely made some progress last night. It sounded great when it finally lit up. Once the fuel issue is dealt with you are gonna have one mean mother. I have learned a good bit just sitting back watching you guys troubleshoot.

Keep at it buddy and one day you will be stylin like Mike Honcho!

Terd good job! Good teamwork boys!! on the flipside terd no from now on, anytime plugs get wet with fuel they are toast already even before they quit firing. get your fuel pressure sorted and put that oil tube back on.

  27. Terd, the truck is about there. Damn, that thing is SWEET!!!!!!
I suspect the answer you got on your other post about the oil line and where it goes was probably correct.
Good luck and keep on truckin'.

Can I just ask why you thought that was good idea to start that truck up with that oil line open? there is a 4ft puddle of oil on the shop floor (which you didn't bother cleaning up last night :) ) And you were worried about the couple things that came out of that brace I pulled from my '32?
