I couldn't have done it without the help of 64 BFX Cyclone and Clayton Char. And it all started with a little picture on a wall at Phils Automotive in Honolulu. And an employee at Rons Performance Center named Alex.

I did see that one also. I'm sure I heard Eddie say Lets go to the 65 super stock nationals and kick some a!!.
Went to Oklahoma and visited the Hajek and Rick Kirk Museums. The cars were way cool, Definitely worth the trip. But the Memrobilla and experimental one off FE stuff was killing me.

Here you go.

Gapp's 65 Comet was the former George DeLorean AFX Comet. It was one of the factory Stroppe built SOHC car. Later on the car was scrapped.

Aloha fellow Comet enthusiasts! I've finally gone through every single posting in this thread, since making contact with Steve (aka Analog Dog).
My moniker was chosen for the car that got away, as I also knew about the factory B/FX car that was in Hawaii, but I was too new to cars to realize what it was, and too buck poor to make the $5000 purchase at the time. Besides, I was mostly into Mustangs at the time, in fact, my '70 Boss 302 and '70 Mach1 are visible in the background of the shots Steve posted of the B/FX car in the storage lot before it was shipped out.
The car I have now, is indeed one of the documented HiPo 289 '64 Cyclones. (Steve, I still have to find the scanner, had guests and moved it from the spare room...). I wanted this car because after having dozens of Mustangs (a lot were parts cars I drove until they were parted out), I wanted something different, something significant. What better than a '64-'65 Comet? I didn't know what it was until it was home. Now, after reading this thread and discussing things with Steve, my plans for this car have changed. Instead of an A/FX replica with a cut up body, I'm going to make it a B/FX replica instead, so my modifications will be easily reversible. I'm leaning towards a Doug Nash styled car, but will go with my own paint scheme. Webers on a small block with a top-loader are in the mix as well.
I think I have to find another Comet and put my injected 427 in it, but first, anyone want to buy a '66 Fairlane with a straight axle?
Aloha,
Robert

So Steve and I have thrown around the idea of starting a registry for Mercury's more unique '64 and '65 cars, starting with the A/FX and B/FX cars that were factory built, and the specials, like the Durability Run and East African Safari cars, and other special order '64 HiPo 289 cars, since the consensus seems to be they were meant for competition.

Any one interested in getting involved?

Any one have pertinent info on these cars, starting with VIN numbers and documentation, vehicle specifics, order and delivery info, drivers, race stats with tracks and dates, other history, and present status?

I think its about time, as the rest of the automotive community is finally taking notice, and there are so many people who know so much on this thread (and elsewhere) with knowledge and stories to share.

Let me or Steve (aka Analog Dog) know. This should help fire up the thread again!

Falconred, It was neet to see the collection, But I know where your comming from. It almost makes a guy question it all while your there. Each car you wonder.
He needs to Hire a full time guy to take care of the cars and building though, sad to see all the dust and flats on cars that half of us would treasure to own.
Next time you catch up with me youll have to ask me about the behind the scene stories.

I finally took the plunge and bought this '64 off the internet. Picked it up the other day and it needs some TLC, but very limited rust and pretty much unmolested.

I can tell that it has a mid-year build date because of the horizontal trim piece at the bottom of the rear roof pillar. It looks like it's in good shape.

Re Comet Registry:

Re the seven factory Stroppe built 1965 AFX Comets, I believe you will find these cars have been documented for quite some time among the current owners.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
Re factory Stroppe built 1965 BFX Comets, there is some question to how many units were built. One owner claims only 15. I have seen internal factory documentation stating 50 units. Among the owners, I believe there are around 15 cars documented in some shape or form.

Re factory DST built 1964 AFX Comets, there were a couple thoughts on how many units were built. The wagon and two groups of ten coupes for 21 total. I’ve also heard 22 units, that is the wagon, a development coupe, and two groups of ten coupes. I tend to believe at least 22 units, as there was the wagon, the S&M car which is a very early Los Angeles Assy Plt 4J23F build, then two groups of ten from the Lorain Assy Plt, 4H23_ builds. A number of the 1964 AFX cars changed hands during the 1964 racing seasons, which makes it appear even more cars were built.

Re factory built 1964 BFX Comets, there was the blue Doug Nash coupe which was built from a former Durability car. The above does not take into consideration the cars built by Pflugger Motors.

If you go back in this thread, most of the AFX cars have either been identified and/or a picture posted.

Looking for some Prayers for Mine and Fast Eddies Friend Dale Schroeder. Dale has the 64 T-Bolt Tribute Race car . Dale was involved in a wreck in his T-Bolt this last weekend out at Julesburg Dragway. Something happened to his car at the end of the track after winning his race, It took a hard right turn and rolled 6 times. I just found out tonight his wife Sandy called asking for Prayers. A couple of compresion fractures in his back, three broke ribs, and a punctured lung. I guess he has been in and out of critical condition. Dale, Eddie and myself were going to race Julesburg this next weekend and then get ready to Caravan out to Cal. Hot Rod reunion. I dont want to lose another friend this year, You better make it Dale.

Thanks for the reply Dennis. I made an Excel file of the cars I've identified through the pictures I've seen here and elsewhere, and am still trying to get my head around who had what car when and how was it evolved. If you'd like to reply to my email address "no1musclecar at yah00 dot com" I can send it to you and see if you can help me make sense of it. It is by no means comprehensive, but at 12x114 cells I think I have gathered a lot of info. Once the info is cleaned up, I can link photos to each car at different point in time, then I can post it to share with everyone.
Aloha,
