Just heard a few horror stories from when the first started selling them. Like one standard bore piston one .30 over and one .40 over on in the same block. But if they are still have a decent warranty all your going to be out is time.

One came thru my shop a few years ago. It was not a thing of beauty! It had mismatched pistons and two were oversized by.010, just two! Not all that clean either. The block hadn't been decked. I don't remember just what all was wrong with it but I refused to install it for the customer that brought it in. Normal Norman

Not me!! Been down that block before 180 miles and a spun bearing. 10 months waiting on a their evaluation & replacement. Still had to get it gone thru to make sure it was right the second and of course it wasn't. The warranties are garbage.

Better off having one built so you know exactly what is in it.

$1700.00!!! too much for a questionable motor. a while back I had the local machine shop build me a 350 from motors he already had, I did the R & R and brought him back the old motor for exchange. it was less than that, and I knew there were no half assed repairs done.

thats pretty amazing they would just throw a engine together with different size pistons.. do you not buy pistons by the set.. good luck beast.

  15. Bad Motors i put 1 in a p/u and it took to much time to make it run better
valves to tight and would not start had to pull the heads valve stems were to high
    found 3 sizes of pistons
they only pay 25% of labor costs for warranty
did a 460 in a motor home 3 times the stough is cheep junk
go to ORelys they have ATK always run good les trouble
or get a Jasper they are good also

I have a friend with a SHOP who absolutely refuses to install a ADVANCED AUTO parts engine. He has installed three and ALL of them were trouble. The Ford one smoked badly ... the owner wrecked it before Advance would make it good. The Dodge one spun a bearing within 200 miles. Took about 30 days to get Warranty ... the replacement engine ... had a cracked head ...

They finally refunded the Dodge owners money for the engine but shafted him on the labor.

  19. I can go to a you-pick yard and get TEN engines for $1700. Guaranteed for 30 days. You can rip it apart as much as you want to check it out before you buy.

The ol' Texas Time Bomb. I would have to say no to that. Look up Crankshaft Supply out of Minneapolis, MN they know everyone they will steer you in the right direction.

What makes a crate motor? I always thought a crate engine was from factory.....

  22. Engine factories buy them in bulk quantities, there is no such thing as a traditional set. You'd only notice an odd piston in a short-block assembly, once the heads on, they're like women. Turn out the lights and they all look the same.

Your right, crate motor terminology is from the factory.

  24. We have a local shop that specializes in used motor swaps. A total class act and they have a good reputation. He gets nice used engines from a local yard, already steamed clean and also a 90-day warranty after the installation.

I just saw one installed in an OT GM product, quiet as a mouse and a clean install. Maybe used (not abused) is the way to go.

If you buy an engine from a parts store it is a remanned engine. They have a good warranty but who wants to R & R them.

Summit Sells the GM 350 engine New, not rebuilt for $1600. My opinion is, thats the way to go. Its new, its GM. Not remanned or rebuilt.

Advance here by me sells 350 engines for $1200. SO I am not sure about your stores prices either. I have bought remanned engines with great luck I might add.

Stay away they are junk. just fixed one hung a valve they just bored out the old guide and installed valves with oversized stems. The ultimate in poor quality.

Do Ford and Chrysler(now FIAT) sell a crate motor in their small and big block forms like GM does?

Sounds like you'd be further ahead to buy a used engine from a reputable junkyard. The yard we buy used engines from at the dealership offers a minimum of a one year warranty, and we've never had a sour one of the 20 or 30 we've installed in customer cars.

JASPER. That would be my choice if I was looking to replace my 302 Ford motor. We used several at work with not one problem.
