I've seen a few pics of these rare birds here and there but never seen one in person. What a cool body style, big ol' long roadster door... anyone have any pics of them as hot rods?

This body style was so desireable that Gibbon, I believe, made a fibreglass version of it in the 70s. Don't know how many they eventually made but you'll see them in 70s-80s Rod & Custom, Street Rodder, Rod Action etc from those decades.

There is a righthand drive being restored here in town. Sorry, no pics. The body is on a wooden subframe like a Chevy of the era.

The interior is a neat detail...they have low bucket seats up front and a dropped steering column adding to their sporty look.

Great graphics! They turn the boring smooth flow of the body lines into what looks like a color animation of a porcupine finding the third rail!

These were big in the seventies and eighties because of the Gibbon repros. If I remember the story correctly, the major consumers for this car was one of the L.A. papers (Times?) as route delivery cars. It always seemed to support that fact because most of the steel original cars were on the West coast. Pretty sure they were bodied by Murray, so that explains the wood. I just had a diagreement the other day with some one that these cars actually existed, surprisingly with someone who should have actually known better! In my opinion, the coolest one ever built was done by Frank Duvalle of the windshield fame, and was said to be the first non-36 car to be fitted. My scanner is broken, so I cant post it, but it was in the American Rodder that carried his interview about twenty years ago...

Some of the misinfo comes from those early Ford experts over at Streetrodder magazine.
A couple of years ago they featured one of these and raved over the unique one-off factory experimental prototype body...
You'd think at least minimal familiarity with Model A's would be required in some circles.

In my ever so humble opinion, the two door phaetons are the holy grail of Model As

Speaking of unique one-off factory experimental prototype body styles, how about the Model A 3 window? I kind of like that one too.

There are actually 2 different Model A 3 window prototypes. One is sort of crude and primitive, looking a bit like a '29 Chevy, the other has evolved half way to the deuce 3 W. At least one 3W still exists!

And...how about the town car delivery, and the Deluxe pickup body that appeared both as an A and an AA...

  21. Bruce,

    Don't forget about the Buehrig-bodied 3 window!

Gibbon did make a repro body in the 70's. I know because we have one here. Purchased it from a guy in Gilroy, CA that found a steel one to use. His is going to be SBC powered hiboy along a late 50's style and the one we are getting ready to build for a customer is going to be a Y-block powered hiboy along early 50's style. They are a really cool body style and provide lots of room for friends to ride along.

I had an Omaha orange one in the mid '80's. It was featured in Rod Action. Sat really low. Last I heard it was on the east coast.

....And yours with the moons and '29 fenders was the very first one to come to mind this morning when I saw this thread! Then Chuck Sloggit's red one from Street Rodder around '78 or so. But yours was one of the cars that did the "GOTCHA" on me for Model "A"s...

They may be rare depending on were you live but there are six of them within an hours drive of my place. Check the Ford Barn for more info, the Ford body style is 180A.

The ol' possum hisself (former L.A. Roadsters member Rick Stees) had a Gibbon bodied full-fendered '31 Phaeton built for him by Gibbon in '76.
When they delivered it the wiring had a direct short, and when it came off the trailer, it let all the smoke out of the loom...
I rewired it, at Rick's house in San Jose.
He disassembled the car, and painted it a metallic root beer brown.
The 'legend' on the plaque? "EAT MO' POSSUM". Natch.
