Detroit Guided Tour ?

Over the past few months i seem to keep running across images of old Detroit buildings, in magazines, TV, and internet. Many of these are auto related, some are not, all are derelict.

I realise most are not in the,, uhh,, most desired areas of the city, which I'm not familiar with, and I don't want to get my ass in trouble.

So I'm wondering does anyone know of any guided tour thru Detroit of these old buildings?

Seems like someone could make a buck doing that.

 

There are charter buses that take you through old Detroit... Not sure of the company... Sorry!

 

Bring a back up piece with some extra clips. LOL

 

Man, ain't that the truth!!! Those buses don't even have bullet proof windows...

 

At least the old Michigan Train Depot is getting a new makeover as I'm typing this post... You can check out the progress pics online...

last season there was a cop show based in Detroit. in one of the first episodes they were cruising around where the once great houses were, so I got in google maps and cruised around a bit. must have been quite the place to live back in the day.

just scary and sad now.

I think the liability would out weigh the benifits

and guys ,they are called "magazines"..clips dont have springs

the train station deal is a publicity stunt, i dont think it will go the full game, more money to rehab than its worth..imo

I'm a native Detroiter, and familiar with most if not all of the cool spots as well as the don't go there places. If you want a tour, look me up when you're in town, I'd be happy to show you around, plan on at LEAST a few hours if you want to see more than just a few spots, too. We have a LOT

 

There's a lot of stuff that's not old and decaying as well, well worth a look.

I haven't got a time set to go or anything near to a plan.
I only live about an hour from Detroit so it's not a big trip.

As for things I'd like to see, the main is some of the old archetecture , the old buildings look pretty remarkable.
The only ones I know (not seen) are the train station and i believe the old Michigan Theatre, where Ford started it all.

Anyone have any recommendations for other places?

Walter P Chrysler Museum..gotta do that too..its out of detroit proper,, in Auburn Hills..not that far, worth the trip

I hit alot of concerts downtown. The Fox is awesome. The Fillmore is awesome. We saw ZZ Top at the fox and I spent more time looking at the building than watching the band.

I went to downtown Setroit at 5 AM one Sunday morning in the summer to photograph the buildings.

I was more worried about running into a grizzly in the back country of Grand Tetons & Yellowstone, then being shot or robbed in Detroit. I worked in one of the neighborhoods in the 80's and the worst that happened was having a battery stolen. If your going to see areas such as Indian Village, Boston-Edison and downtown there is nothing more to worry about than anywhere else. Now wandering around abandoned buidings, then that's another story.

 

I'm going to Indian Village tomorrow for a tour of the gorgeous homes there. I grew up in Detroit and usually head back at least once a week. If you decide to come down you'll be surprised how it's changing. The piquet plant is loaded with history and cars, the guardian building, Masonic temple, train station (the architecture in and out is amazing), Michigan theatre, eastern market...there's to much to list. Then go to American or Lafayette coney for lunch or head to south west to Eidies for awesome tamales. Then of course there's all the new art movement going on and the museum district. I'll stop now, as you can tell I love the city.

Just FYI, the car portion of the Ford Museum is closed until spring. I was there a couple weeks ago for the old car festival and I'm going to have to go back this spring to see it.

Also, if you want to do the Rouge Factory tour, go during the week. It's closed on the weekends.

I agree, as soon as the new bridge debate is settled, work will stop on the train station.
