I hate that movie, try building a decades old import and having to explain to every idiot that your car is not a race car, doesn't have NOS, doesn't even have a computer. Then I get some idiot comment that it must be slow then.

thats awesome you should have taken a video of that.

  4. I know they are O/T car's however I had a discussion with a "gent" once which pretty much descended into an arguement because he believed that Mustang's came with four doors. No amount of anything would make he believe otherwise, in fact his friend, of course had a few of them. (there is always a friend).

In the end all I could do was tell him to let his friend know he was sitting on a goldmine and he should have them well insured.

So when I was working for a car collector in Kansas, I got to drive his '40 Ford coupe to a show. It was a hottie from the '50s; '56 Pontiac mill that an owner had won that year as the grand prize and replaced the flathead. It still had it's pin striping and signed at the rear bottom in 1950.
The trip home, I drove his barn find '70 Hemi-Cuda (not into that genre, but it WAS badass). A barn find, all red, color keyed bumpers, pistol grip, the whole 9 yards. When we got back, as if on cue, a couple WT hillbillys walk up and start talking about it being a clone and they know a clone when they see it. He's building his own clone and gonna sell it for 90,000 blah blah blah.

It's fun to watch people just crow like a rooster about thier (lack of) knowledge. That's better than slapping them!

Got told last night by a guy that
"chevy didn't make a belair in post cars for 1955, 1956' was the first year of belairs and that was only hardtops.
I told him he was wrong, and he got all defensive. argued with me back and for "yea what makes you think you know". So I say, well I dunno, I guess because I own one... Wanna come check out my vin tags :p

Oh yeah and same guy about my friends 454 powered truck "that 4l80e is fu*kin junk not strong enough, you need to swap in a turbo 400"

at this point i just stopped listening to him.

Not the most rediculous, but most recent.

I've heard that several hundred times, unfortunatly nobody's ever made that offer to me. And, whenever I've heard it I'll ask them to let me try to grab it... still, sadly, the opportunity has never presented itself.

  9. the guy who i bought my 58 olds swore from asshole to stern that it was a 57. it was a SPECIAL early model. i said ok, suuuure. i think i first knew he didnt know shit when the employee wrote on the windshield it was a 57 CHRYSLER. huh?!? some people....

I was at the drags two weekends ago and heard the ultimate. A buddy made a pass, and two brothers he knew walked up to him in the pits and said "It needs ONE step richer jets in the secondaries. No reading plugs, no O2 sensor or guage, just knew it needed one step richer jets....one step. The car ran well, packed the front tires and made a clean pass etc.

I was soooo impressed by these guys ability to read an air fuel mixture and know it was ONE step lean just from watching the car make a pass.

I just hate know it all jackasses that HAVE to give input when they dont know shit.

BTW, we pulled a plug and it had a nice tan color. So much for sniffing the wind to read air fuel mixtures :D

Not at a car show, but my Mom's new "guy-friend" came to the shop the other day and saw all the hot rods we're working on and evidently thought he had to impress me with a car-story.

He said that back in the late 50's, he had a '55 Chevy with a "283 Power-Pack" and one time he was racing a guy and when they took off it left harder than normal and went about 100 yards and just shut off.

I'm thinking that maybe the motor mounts broke and the cap hit the firewall and cracked the cap, or... maybe there was a vapor-lock issue... or... something mundane like that. Not so! That would be WAY too boring!

Seems that when the car "hooked" (with 1950's street bias-ply tires on a 1950's back-road) it lifted the front end so high that the tailpipes were flattened when they got caught between the bumper and the roadway. The car "just couldn't breath, and it just shut down" he said.

Yeah this made me smile.... Not sure if I told this one... I work for a high school and help run student council. The local vette club is nice enough to escort each candidate for queen in a vette from various years. They drive em from the school to the game in a big parade.. Pretty sweet deal for sure even if you don't love vettes. Well the husband of the president of the club took a shine to the old 53 and proceeded to tell me bootleggin lore from "back in the day".. I guess his buddy had an ex bootleggin car that ran incredible feats of speed. Even went so fast, he could not keep he front tires on the ground while driving it. I had to bite my tongue and smile. Can't tick off the club when they are so nice to help out the kids.

My old boss told me he went to look at a 46 Ford convert for sale back in the 60s, it still had a flathead in it. He knew the salesman was a stroke when he was told it had a 3/4 inch cam.

I'll bet what you remember are probably two Mustang GT's with the factory stripes down the side. Shelby did not sell anything but fastbacks except for six convertibles they made in '66 unless your dad's friends were factory racers, then I take that back.

Watching a car pull the front wheels has always been one of my best memories.
I was in the 8th grade, so it was about 1964. I was walking home from school. At the intersection closest to school was a primer grey 55 Chevy with a straight axle, sitting high, gasser style with a young woman driving. She had a young child with her, you can guess her age. She was waiting for a gap in the after school traffic so she could turn left. She saw her gap and began to let out the clutch and realized the engine was going to die so she pushed the clutch back in, raced the engine and in her hurry to turn, let the clutch out too quickly. In other words, she raced the engine and (kind of) popped the clutch. The result was a real nice 6" wheelie!
I'll never forget it and I'm sure she didnt know it happened.

  22. Tell me about it! I worked with a guy that used to put in a tank of "the good stuff" every now and then as a treat for his four door, late model, family, winter beater, whatever. DIPSHIT!!!

Well now I wonder, could the old crown vic's top 150? I know they were fast but that just sounds to be a little too fast.

Have you heard about ford's new police car in the making? They are making a car that (while driving) should supposedly be able to change its mpg to how you are driving so that chases wont require so many fill ups. Like lets say you are doing light to light, you press a button and PRESTO! You are getting ideal mileage at 45-ish, and then you press another button and your ideal speed is closer to 100. I don't remember speed facts about it but I thouht the mileage thing is pretty cool.

So I'm hanging at my local cruise with my 57 vette (aztec copper, dual quad 283) when up strolls a guy with his wife/girl friend and begins to pick apart my car trying to impress his date with his knowledge. Now I'm not near the car but within ear shot and he starts off buy pointing out all the flaws in the paint, then says the paint isn't a stock color and that the motor is wrong. Says all early vettes had straight 6's and power glides. You know the type, boots untied, nascar hat on backwards with a wife beater t-shirt with the baggy pants falling off !!!!

  27. " How fast is it?"

I go to a lot of car shows and on two occasions I noticed that the carbs were leaking on an engine. Both times the owners said that they "just" had the carbs done. Huh????

At a gas station the other day...saw a guy with a nice stude truck as I was pullin the Buick into the carwash... I went to compliment the guy on his truck and he told me he never drives it. The only time he drives it is to "go golfing" as he like throwing his clubs in the back  That's it. No cruising, nothing.

After watching a pass by two funny cars at the now-defunct Calder dragstrip, I heard one bloke scoff at his mate for asking if they ran a Turbo 350. "You for real man?! It's a Turbo 400!"
