This was posted on another forum and I looked at the list of ones here in this area. What was strange is that a few months ago I was driving out of town and stopped at one of the stations on the list (Sunoco) and got gas. My daily driver has to have premium and I filled up there.

I know how long gas lasts me in my car, and after getting gas there I started to notice the digital gauge was not dropping down as fast as usual. I even commented to my Sons that for some reason my car was getting much better gas milage. That tank of gas lasted me 3 or 4 days longer than it normally would, and I drive exactly the same route and distance pretty much every day.

I think the ethanol free gas was just that much better on milage. I have heard that is true, but didn't realize it was THAT much better. :)

Nice, looks like I've got one right down the street, then another a few miles away.

How much more for ethanol free? Fortunately in KY we don't have to deal with ethanol. In Florida the ethanol is usually about $ .40 a gallon higher. Ethanol gives real bad MPG.

    There are actually a few.

  10. I just read that "ethanol enhanced" gasoline will get you 20-30% less mpg. The oil company are f---ing us again!!!

  11. No, not true. Those of us that have had ethanol for 25-30 years have a wee bit of experience when it comes to this. I am within 1 mpg per tank between straight NL and 10-24% blends (I have the choice up here of 3 or 4 blends)

  12. I hate to tell you this Tman. When I bought my 2005 work van 6 years ago it got 18 plus mpg on non ethanol gas. Now that I can only get ethanol enhanced gas I barely get 14mpg. It only has 64k miles and is maintained regularly and I only run good synthetic oil. And my wifes 2007 Pontiac G6 used to get 31mpg on non ethanol gas but now gets 26mpg. And most of my friends have complained about the same thing, they all notice a huge difference in mpg.
Since you are in a higher elevation than we are you may get higher quality gas than us down here at sea level.

Here in TX most stations are in small towns except for about 5 mid-size towns. All the large Metro areas in the state have EPA and state restrictions which leaves us, here in Harris County(Houston and five surrounding counties, out of the loop.

The energy value in ethanol is almost but not quite 1/2 that of gasoline so 10% ethanol mixed with 90% gasoline should have about 4or5% less energy value.

Same here, about 1 mpg................A local Quikfill station I have been fueling up at for several years went from puregas to 10 percent Ethanol about 6 months ago.My daily driver Jeep Cherokee went down about 1 mpg,no difference in power.51 Willy and 50 Chevy truck run exactly the same.....
However I do notice my newer chain saws do require an extra rope pull sometimes on a hot restart.

Just a general question? would a later 1971 mild 350sbc 9.8 c. r. set up to run 93 octane, 10% eathanol, run better on 90 octane 100% unleaded?

Myself I've been lucky that there is a ethanol free station not far from me and even tho it's a little more money thats all I use in every thing I own from the lawn equipment, Tractor and both my car and truck. I have experienced when I've been somewhere and had to use ethanol mixed fuel my mileage goes down and have noticed a difference in idle as well. I have also seen at least around here that some stations independent mostly are going back to ethanol free gas.

  21. Two in KC one is a Marina, I have been there they won't put gas in your car and the other is in the neighborhood. Or should I say used to be in the neighborhood it has been closed for awhile now.

  22. Can't find real gasoline near here. When I go west to Az. I stop in Abliene and top off with real gas. Stop In Odessa and top off. From just west of Odessa the legal limit goes to 80 mph. I can set the cruise at 85 and get 22 mpg from a 07 F150 5.4. We got to be getting messed around.

the big thing is that it's setup for 93 and not 90, depending on how dialed in it is for that 93 it may not like 90. You'll have to check the tune with the 90, and probably at least adjust timing.

I have no issues with 10% Ethanol gas, we've had here for 20 years... I might lose 1 or 2 mpg but that's about it.

  24. No.....It's the Government screwing us with the ethanol just like all the taxes they have on gas that makes the cost so high. I have heard that almost 80% of the cost of gas is Taxes!!!

93 octane is still 4 bucks with 10% ethanol and the closest gas station to me is about 50 miles away. Great information if you're near a station that has real gas. Thanks for posting

  27. Exactly.

Who cares why we have ethanol anyway it isn't something that we can change. Worry about the things that you have control over.

I actually think that ethanol in theory is a good thing. I jet for ehtanol as that is what I can get consistantly. When I get to the track I dump a load of race fuel in my tank, now it is a little fat because I am jetted for ethanol. I uncork the headers it cleans better and now I don't have to rejet. :D:D

You should get better MPG's with ethanol the with E10. Ethanol has 30% less energy in it then regular gasoline. So 10% of your fuel has 30% less energy then the rest of it. Im not the best at math, but I think its roughly 3% your fuel mileage will go down with E10, or go up if you are used to running E10, and switch to E-free it should go up 3%.

  29. The basic rule of thumb for running alcohol like when you are setting up a race engine to run on methanol ( a higher grade than ethanol) is that it takes 3 times as much alcohol to run an engine as it does gasoline.

For instance if it takes you one quart of gasoline to make a pass and your gasoline engine has enough compression to convert and run on methanol it will take 3 quarts to make a pass on alcohol.

I don't know how to make a conversion on an alcohol/gasoline mixture. it probably will not convert straight across. I do know that when they thought everyone was going to run on E-85 some one smarter than I crunched the numbers, with gasoline @ $4.00 a gallon and E-85 @ $3.50 they figured with the difference in mileage that the E-85 was costing you the equivalent of $4.50 a gallon.

That makes little difference if performance is what you are after. Speed costs money.

On my question about 90 oct unlead vs 93 oct with 10% E, that 350sbc in a 32 Ford. Timing @35BTC,Holly3310, 750 vac secadarys. Stock jets. Car runs fine. I also have a 1998 Chev 2500 Suburan, 454 cu. in. motor, for towing, Motor has usual addons: K&N cold air kik, MSD 6AL, header&flowmasters, 1.6 rockers, 4.10 rearend, Hypertune 93oct tuneup. All efi & ingition timing are controled by orginal computer. Interstate MPG 10.5, with 93oct?10%E, Interstate MPG 11.7 with 90oct 100% no E. Car runs fine on either.
