This thread is filled with great vintage photos. It seems to me the ones that are of family members are a lot more special. Thanks for sharing your pics!

    Thanks SWI66.

Vinyl roof covering being added to one of about 250 1956 Packard Carribbean Hardtops built. This model was powered by the venerable 374 cubic inch V8 with two four barrels.

" My grandpa moving from the farm in Ohio to start a new life in California, West of Flagstaff, AZ, 1946 " -mumbles-

I'll bet that was one long trip from Ohio to Cali. Esp with no or not many 4 lane roads !

Ahhhhhhh, Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps! One of the best Rock and Roll bands ever. Also, for those that don't know it check Gene out on Youtube to see him do some fantastic crooning. The best, just the BEST!

Ha Ha! That's the whole story of Route 66. Chicago to Los Angeles on 2 lane highway. The best America had to offer in the day.

Its nice not to have a front clip or motor in the car when installing a vinyl top,try installing one with fresh paint and a complete car without scratching the paint and getting the seams perfectly straight. The last two that had to be perfect came in with no front clips on,I am thinking about pulling the hoods on the ones I do from now on so I can kneel on the firewall while pulling the seams straight.

  14. Roadkill, you post lots of great pics. Look at the tail lights on this travel trailer from one of your posts. They appear similar to those on a 47-48 Buick - at least I think they do. Wonder if this trailer is some sort of GM derivative - anyone know?

I also noticed the Buick taillights and the Packard ragtop towing it but I really like teasing some guy around here with a "woodie" fetish (pun intended)

never miss a chance to enjoy a woodie.. :D

  20. I bet two years later he was dressed in a military uniform. We will never know of his outcome in life. I like to think he made it home, married and raised a great family. Who knows possibly his children and grandchildren are people we look up to today. There aren't very many that's for sure. He sure looks different than the fat faced slobets this generation is producing.
    One can only wonder.

Rondal Partridge shot this photo April 9, 1940, for the National Youth Administration.
It shows a 16-year old lad whose "Labor Contractor" button permitted him to work as a
pea picker alongside adults in California's San Joaquin Valley. At 16 cents a hamper
of fresh peas, he'd earn about two dollars a day. Image thanks to the U.S. National
Archives and to FlickR. My fat fingers on the keyboard are telling me it's time to

    take a break!

JohnnySweet, a HUGE thanks for catching ALL of the implications of this picture! Exactly why I posted it as soon as I found it! I'm voting this one of the INSTANT CLASSIC  pix on Dog's thread!

Though he's just a lad, I see NO fear or trepidation in his visage;), even though he probably wasn't accustomed to having some guy with a Roliflex ask him to stop and pose for a picture (notice, the photog didn't even record the young man's NAME?).

Like YOU, I hope he made it though the war (bet he enlisted at 17?) and went on to have a happy family life. As you say, one can only WONDER!

But, if Alfred Eisenstadt didn't get this couple's
names on VJ Day 1945  -- YET both of the IDs
were defined, finally, 50-some years later  -- then
I think SOMEBODY in this internet world knows
how our young pea-picker turned out!!!!
    The gaunlet is thrown!!!

#31542 Lower left corner photo titled "Parade Phaeton"... What have we here? Has an early 50's Chrysler vibe to it. Are those air scoops I see on the rear fenders? Having some interest in concept cars I can truthfully say I'v never seen that one.

You are probably used to seeing them after the facelift they received in 1955.
The photo (below) and in the previous post shows one of them in their original form from 1952.
