Barn finds are cool but....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sandmountainslim, Oct 1, 2011.

  1. I like to read the story of a person who finds a lucky barn find or mint car and manages to get it for a build but I REALLY like reading about cars that were found in the woods or in the bottom of a lake somewhere that someone dragged out and salvaged or salvaged parts off of. To me something abandoned in a patch of woods, a field or the desert just has TONS of character that little else can match. Anyone agree with me on this....or better yet have pics of woods/field/desert/river find cars they wanna show?

Sounds about like my 55 chevy panel, but it was in an abandoned barn when my buddy found it, so technically a barn find. It was a pos that no one really cares about, but I decided to build it anyways. No one in their right mind would had wasted so much time and money on it like I have. The build thread is in my signature.

I like them both, but most outdoor finds are a real challenge today, there are many skilled builders on the HAMB that have turned junk into Top Shelf automobiles. Just remembered my Lyndwood was out in the woods covered in leaves when I brought the remains home. I'll find some early photos.

Barn finds are a little more realistic living in New England. Stuff left out through our winters doesn't hold up to well !!! Hey 37 Kid, I've got a brother & sister-in law living in Ridgefield on Shadow Lane. (not car people though...they have twin boys) Small world

  6. Cool, can't wait to see some of the pics you gents have.

Here is a T Roadster of some vintage that I ran across last week. Guy didn't wanna sell it and there really isn't much to sell but still cool to see.

I have a similar thing on a rockpile not too far from my dads farm. It turns out its an old late 20's roadster. Not much left though, but the engine cowl & body is still nice.

I found this on a neighbors ranch. It was upside down in a gulley.
Had been there for approx 30 years.

Used to be lots of stuff around me with in a five mile radius or so..Price of scrap went up a couple cents [to maybe 3 cents/lb.] in the early 70's and it pretty much dissappeared...I guess I should have drug it all home..nah, mom would have beat me !!

Me too! I need that car since I have one just like it. I could build one good car outta the two.

  17. Didn't a pedaled powered Hippo have something to do with this?:D And how goes it ?

  18. Nothing much going on with it at the moment. My son's model T is taking precedence. It is in line and waiting for some future craziness! I will make sure to post when I get it started! :)

Please post a link to your thread about this - maybe the greatest non-barn find tale of all time! A true American hot rod classic! For what it's worth, I was born and raised in The Dalles and I know exactly where this infamous incident happened.

  20. Yep I vote his thread one of the top 3 all time. I still laugh when I think about it. Maybe use it as your signature.

This was a 35 Ford 3 window...spent a few days digging it out of an old farm dump, everything that was burried was pretty much disolved....come hell or high water I will use something from it on my long term someday 36 project !

When I find enough to work with I will use this body to hopefully build a 3 window.....or maybe a tribute to the So Cal Plating truck :D

My '48 GMC was found out in a friend's family's pasture in western ND. Guy even had the title stashed away. :)

It currently has a drivetrain transplant from a '76 blazer under it, but is sitting at my dad's place 170 miles away, so it doesnt get worked on as it should until I find space closer.

So my dad used to be an inspector for the city. One day he told me of this truck and took me to see it, since I just love old trucks and he likes to tease me. Anyways a couple of years later the house came up for sale. So I got ahold of the owner to ask what was going to happen to the truck and she said she just needs to clean everything up and I could have the truck and whatever else is in the garage behind it. Long story short I got the truck home and should have it on the road next summer. It runs and drives already I just have to finish restoring the body. Anyways back to the garage....The garage was FULL of old stuff because the owners dad was a hoarder. I ended up getting a piano from around 1904, 28-29 model A front clip, bunch of old unopened oil cans, license plates, a 1980's huffy promo bike for Baskin Robbins that was new in the box and a really cool auto club emblem that reads International Automobile Ass'n. It was so cool going through the garage, but kind of scary because the back of it was falling down!!
