    Gentlemen,
Yesterday I tried to post this note. When I finished typing the message vanished and I was told I was logged off. So I tried to copy it from my word file and it wont let me paste it. So I tried an attach. did that work?

    Fergit all that BS.
    Here's my post:
    Gentlemen,
I took your advice, “read first”. I liked what I read,, but,, lighten up. My security question was “is it typically warm or cold in the winter”? I live in N.E. Ohio and the answer to that question is YES! Your computer did not like my answer. It asked me two more questions before it got an answer it liked. (no sense of humor I guess). You asked for some credentials and personal info. OK, understandable. I am a retired design engineer, 70 plus years old (don’t keep track anymore). The last twenty years of my career was with Goodyear T&R designing air springs and the machines that built and tested them. I have been buildin’ and wrenchin’ since I was ten years old. Started with bikes and went on to Whizzers, flat heads, small blocks, early hemi’s, Harleys, BSA’s, OHC, oh I almost forgot, Uncle Sam taught me about helio choppers and a bunch of other stuff. Presently I have a 2005 Vette, a 1966 Impala SS ragtop (got it in the late 70’s), a ’79 Honda 750 Ltd edition (new) and my present project, a 1950 Chevy coupe.. I have always done my own work, both mechanical and body on more vehichles than I can remember. Is this enough info about me to allow me to pick your respective brains?

I have learned over the years that the best way to find things out is to ask the people who have been there. After reading some of your forum, you guys seem to know your defecation.

So, here are my problems and questions. As stated, my present project is a 1950 Chevy that I have mated with a ’79 Chev 292, professionally built. It has been adorned with .060 over 283 pistons. (read that about 10 : 1 comp) tube headers, Offy 3 carb manifold, HEI ignition, and a mid range “RV” cam. The engine has, maybe, six hours on it. (easy driving) . Last week I took it for a little trip around the lake (around five miles) . Didn’t make it! About four miles down the road, it sounded like there was a small elf with a hammer tryin’ to beat his way out! Long story made short, I pulled the engine and to my surprise there was no elf. There was however a camshaft that had worked its way toward the rear of the engine about 5/16 of an inch. WTF happened? How can that be? What do I do now? Before you tell me to see the guy that built it, I should tell you that he is now dead. With all the “stuff” that I have worked on, an inline six doesn’t come up. Sooo here I am askin’ y’all…. WTF???

I would welcome any suggestions, directions, or comments…

  2. Rog,
Looks like your a little frustrated with the site.
Post your questions on the general discussion page and everything will fall in place. Old farts are revered here. Good luck on your build and welcome from Michigan.

Guys with the experience you have are the reason I joined Rog. I don't have any Chevy 6 experience but someone here surely has. You've come to the right place!

rog, cant really offer advice on that, never heard of that either. i am, however, very interested in your build, including what went wrong. i am in the parts gathering stage of a nearly identical build. i know 4 miles isnt much but was wondering how it ran, compression too high? cam/powerband, who set up carbs and definately want to know what went wrong with cam.

    Thanks for your reply,
Total miles on this engine is about 25. The only problem I have had before this is carbs too rich, not a lot but a little sooty. Haven't labored or over rev'd it. Really at a loss about what happened. Thoughts are just stickin' a new/different cam in and startin' over.

but is it the cam itself or loose cam gear? dont know if anything at rear cam bearing keeps it from traveling back but the front mounting plate goes on the cam before the gear does. if the gear moved forward, the cam could slide back that amount or until it bottomed out at rear of engine.

Good point, is it the cam or the gear? I guess the only way to know that is to mic both and compare to spec. I'm thinking that I should just replace both with new. WACHA THINK?

far from an expert. very little experience with th 6 banger. but, the cam gear is aluminum and needs heated up to remove and reinstall. forcing it on cold shaves away some of the metal. if thats the case, keep the cam and by a new gear. it will literally fall off and on when heated up and never move once cooled down.
