If 2 Lane Blacktop got 3 of 4 stars, then Grand Prix with James Garner deserves 8 of 4 stars....Not HAMB friendly but as far as car movies go, it's a cinematic masterpiece....

  3. "The Hitchiker" was acclaimed character actor Harry Dean Stanton. I get the feeling a lot of the younger viewers who disliked or "don't get" this film also prefer the newer Jerry Bruckheimer-style versions of a lot of recent movies, not even realizing they are inferior remakes.

Fans of Warren Oates and TLB director Monte Helman should check out Cockfighter, made in '74.

    Aloha,
No acadamy award winner, but cool cars and fun for the times. Your steriotypical 55 gasser. I have the movie poster up in my garage. Warren Oates part was such a B.S.er. I know guys just like him. The kind that say things like ,"I have a 396 Ford Hemi in my 67 Mustang". Big Al

I thought it was "make it 3 large.." as in $100 bills. Not 3 yards.

BAHA! My son and I kept rewinding it the other night trying to figure out exactly what he said. I think you might have it. I bet I rewinded it 10 times.

For a long time I thought it was yards too, but "three large" makes more sense. Still a bad movie that I like to watch from time to time, and a great quote either way.

It is at the diner they were driving through looking for cars to race near the beginning. It was said to the owner of the green coupe.

The ending was probably meant to let each audience member come up with their own conclusions about how it ended. Sort of like the last episode of the Sopranos when the screen just goes black at the end.........did it mean Tony got shot, or what? Kind of an artsy way to wrap things up.

What I liked the best about the 55 was the rockcrusher whine and zero insulation in the car to muffle it. :D It has been written that Richard Ruth, who built the cars for the movie, took the 55 down to the local Cal hot spots and won some money racing it before he turned it over to the studio. That would have been very cool to see, the 55 is just badass.

Kind of an interesting read here about the history of the cars.

this is why i love it so much too, i really could feel it. all the pauses, the loneliness, and the open road. just pure amazing. and the 55. engine whining, tire burning, refilling, filling up with hitchhikers in nonexisting rear seats..

I reckon it's 'yards'. The word 'large' here in Aussie means a thousand, as in "that knucklehead paid 10 large for that pile of shit".

Dude! Can you make a copy of that for me? I want my 15 y.o. brother to see it. It's not on DVD. That movie and Gleaming the Cube were two movies I loved as kid.

watching the clip sure sounds like "yards" then in the back ground someone says 300.00.

  26. James Taylor said he was pretty lit when he uttered that line: "Make it three yards ... and we'll have ourselves an automobile race." He also says he has never watched the film...

  27. Speaking of Duel, that's a great movie in it's own rite.

oooo, so maybe he forgot his line.. and thats why the guy in the back ground says thats 300.00 to keep the scene going.. inquiring minds want to know :D

iv heard people say its X large meaning 100.00 plenty of times, yards not so much.. but iv only lived in the pacific northwest all my life minus the last 11 years.

The cars were EXTREMELY well set up, probably overkill for such a sucky movie (which I enjoy watching). Taylor and Wilson seem like they are ad-libbing the whole movie. Like they were never handed a script maybe? Had to be difficult keeping the same facial expression throughout filming. Still better than the Gone in 60 Sec remake! peace
