It's for your granson to hang on to sitting on your lap.

' There is no clutch – the torque is enough when the engine is simpled. The middle “steering wheel” is the throttle (or rear wheel steering). The car was controlled on dirt balancing the two wheels one with each hand. Apparently no other cars could keep up with it accelerating out of the bends as the steam pressure had built going into them. '

So you are saying your head and ass had to be wired together?? Steering with one hand and throttleing with the other, both by a steering wheel?? Sounds like fun!!

Poor old Webb Jay, I never realized he had to contend with those interesting controls. No wonder he gave up racing after putting Billy into Buffalo Lake and took to touring in more conventional vehicles.

The car/s you may be refering to were in fact the '183' {3 litre} fitted with the '122' {2 litre} engine as per Grand Prix regulations.

  25. I presume this is the Curtiss/Monarch that Mark Walker used to run. I have seen videos of him running the V8 Darracq so I guess the Monarch has changed hands?

  27. Keith, there is a NZ guy in UK,whose name escapes me at the moment - used to drive the Wolseley Viper-powered early Vauxhall. Last I heard he was putting together a car with a very large Hispano-Suiza V12 aero engine - with maybe an H-S 6 chassis? Do you have any photos of it?

Saacha, the photo your friend sent you appears on page 257 in Gary Doyle's "King of the Boards - The Life and Times of Jimmy Murphy"

There are some snippets of info here and there in the book concerning the cars you mention.
