I can' believe this thread got posted. I just spent the last frickin hour looking for an AN 6-3/8 npt fitting that I JUST HAD, and now the damn thing has walked off, so I got frustrated, decided to relax and visit the HAMB, and I find this thread. Glad its not just me.....

My Daughter in Law says "The minute people are messing with you again dad""It was right here a minute ago!!"It's her explanation on things disappearring in the 2 foot area I haven't moved from in the last 2 hours!I'll tell you what old timer blacksmiths would insist that you had to ring your anvil BEFORE starting your days work to scare the" Little People" out of the shop or they would hide your tools on you all day and you wouldn't get anything done! Not that my Irish ancestry shows or anything but I have learned when in the forge I damn well better ring that anvil as soon as I walk in!

Did you know your brain can selectively not see things when it wants to, so the part you just put down and now can't find can actually be right there in front of you but your brain doesn't see it, wipes it out basically. The same way you don't see two images from your two eyes, but your brain can blend them into one perfect 3d picture.

How many F's in the following sentence?

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.

Six. If you got six you are unusual, but if you got 4 you are normal.

That is your brain deciding what it wants to see.

Well most of you have seen my current signature line for a few months now. That pretty well sums it up.

When I was making a living with my tools I roll over to the box on a creeper and open a drawer and grab a tool and roll back under a car with the right tool. lately I need to do a tool roundup to find them where they have taken roost.
Tomorrow's garage quest is to find the ignition module/coil for my motorized bicycle project so I can see if I can get it running. It's in there somewhere.

  19. I loose parts all the time! Its a blast when (if) I find them though. Most of the time I end up with two of the same part or have to use it to replace the part I borrowed from a friend though.

One of my sons was asking me why I have ten 1/2" drive 9/16 sockets. Sometimes it gets frustrating and the easiest way is just to buy another one. When I was in the Air Force at Mountain Home Idaho they actually did find a 1942 Ford pick up in a hangar full of junk. It stood out because it was still painted olive drab and all the newer pick ups were painted blue.

  23. Ha! I do this all the time - parts, tools, that "thing" I needed - it makes for a rather large "extra parts after a project" pile but hey, that's hotrodding!

 All the time....couldn't find the electric trunk mechanism for my car for mockup. We turned the shop up and down for 3 days and wasted valuable time. I bought a new one. We were cleaning up after sending the car out for interior and I discovered it in a box sitting on a car 2 bays over. Can't tell you how frustrating it is to put something down or away for safe keeping and not being able to find it later.

I'm certain that when it is my time to leave this world, the Angel of Death will walk me through the stages of my life and we will reflect together. He will show me where I went right and where I messed up. We will look at major decisions I made and how it would have turned out. Then he will show me what impacts I had on people, both positive and negative.

Finally, he will take me to a room filled with nothing but cigarette lighters, mismatched socks, random nuts and bolts, and Phillips-head screw drivers. He will explain that it is written into the master plan just to keep things interesting for us.

  26. Used to have a dog we nicknamed nuts and bolts, when a piece of hardware went missing and the dog was around, a check inside her mouth usually revealed said part. One day she was squeaking, pried open her mouth to find a tiny mouse unharmed and confused.

  27. I've gotten to the part that I actually forget I lost said part once-upon-a-time, and now finding it is a pleasant surprise!

My shop is kept quite clean so you would think if you dropped something on the floor you would be able to see it, BUT NO.
I really believe the building is built over an electro-magnetic field that sucks stuff into the fourth dimension.
I can drop tools or parts on the floor and "poof" there gone.
I have had stuff I dropped on the floor re-appear smack dab in the middle of the floor weeks later.
This phenomenom has been going on for almost 30 years!

The only sure way to find a lost part is to go and buy a replacement.

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:DoNotOptimizeForBrowser/> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--> I loose parts all the time and while I look for the part, which I never find, but on a good note I find something else that was missing. How many times do you go looking for a part and get side tracked by some thing else?
