i purchased this intake at Hershey flea market last week for a hemi i have for a project roadster for me and my son to build, i was wondering what year it is, it has no logo on it and looks new, has no wear marks on bolt holes and can still see machine line on gasket head surfaces, it has been gl*** beaded, seen an old add for it for 75$ but does not indicat year(i paid more than that for it), any body have a clue when this intake was made? i seem to have a probleme downloading picture, it is a 4x2 intake
Mid to late 50's is my guess. Looks to me like someone removed the name polishing it then somebody recently bead blasted it. You probably already figured this out but you'll need 97's on that thing, holleys will hit each other Cool intake.
The bolt arrangement and water out let boss on the manifold tells me its Desoto Hemi.... Depending on how wide it is, is what deck height block it will fit. Narrow 276-291 wide 330-341-345.
That appears to be a Cragar. I bought one just like that at Bell Auto Parts around 1959, it had been hanging on the wall behind the counter for several years as it for a '51-'53. I drilled those water bosses out and ran two upper radiator hoses to the upper tank. Four 97's proved to be too much for a basically stock engine, so I blocked off the #2 and #4 and just ran two '97's. Mrs. Johanson got me a "friendly" price , think I paid a whole 50 bucks for it.
I would say cragar also, the bolt pattern down up up down down up up down makes it 331 354 392 hemi, the horne intake had shorter bolt bossed for the center heat cross over area. jeff
i was told that i can run 94 if i grind off some material of the carbs, i was also told that when Horn sold to Crager in between that is when they had no name on it, i don't like the look of it gl*** beaded, what kind of finished did it come with, i was thinking of polishing it some.
I think they came satin. Jot horne is still alive and worked for bell automotive, in 1955 he went on his own and started Horne, he decided to go back to work for bell and sold them the name and patterns for the intake, bell auto owned the cragar name so they put the cragar name on it. more than likely someone ground the name off, but no one knows for sure, another hamber has a horne intake and called and talked with Jot about them but theres some info thats not totally clear, that was along time ago. jeff
in the add i have from crager the picture show's no name, i was wondereing the exact year that the change over was made, or when he went back to work for bell-auto
he only ran the bus for 1 year, the intakes for the hornes were only sold in 1955, so late 55 or early 56 he went back to bell. Cool, scan the add, they are always neat to see. They probably sold them with out a name until they decided to add the cragar name, ive even seen 2 different cragar logo designs on cadillac intakes. jeff
According to cool32's post above, there are two different Olds intakes. One for 49-53 and another for 54-56. What is the difference? I have a Horne for Olds but thought if fit all years.
If you blow up the pic in the add kool32 posted above you can make out the cragar badge in the intake, its just hard to see. the difference in olds intakes would be the port sizes, 303 ports are smaller than 324's.
I dont know, maybe he only made them for 303, 324 would have been a brand newish motor so its hard to say? i have 2 horne olds intakes and 1 cragar olds intake, ill have to take a look at them, i never knew cragar made 2 olds intakes, i have the catolog that they are in i just never noticed. Again, some of my ideas of what is or was may not be correct, they are mainly educated guess' with some facts to back em up. EDIT< i just looked at my intakes, my cragar is 303, tiny ports, one of my horne intake is 303 port size and my other horne looks like its been hogged out for a 324, i can see tool marks so id say someone did it. jeff
I also started a horne thread a while back. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=476444
Please excuse me for using other peoples pictures to make a point. Have you ever noticed how the Horne/Cragar 4x2 intakes for the Hemi have the Holley 94 base pattern: And yet, the spacing of these carb pads will only allow the use of the Stromberg 97's. Holley 94's: Stromberg 97's just fit: I wonder why they didn't just use the Stromberg base pattern instead?
i was told that i could grind of part of the front bolt bosses on the carbs to make them fit, i hope this is true because i bought 6 of them at the hershey flea market last week at the same time as the intake(got some spares)
Im not sure how long or how many they produced, they are the most common but not uncommon either. Ive got some stromberg 97's with that type of base on them.
i polished it some today with steel wool to try and give it the natural look, it had been gl*** beaded and did not look natural
