I have a friend who has a 1940 Chevrolet 4 door ( it is a IFS suspension ) who is having problems with a car he bought off that " auction site ". The seller just plain out lied about the car. He told my friend it had a Mustang II front end but it has a stock, original front end. The steering box is worn out. It must have been adjusted just prior to being delivered 750 miles and did OK for the first 100 miles or so. He took to a well respected front end shop and they aligned it and adjusted the box again. 100/150 miles and it is trash again. The box is just worn out. My Hollander ( # edition 25 ) ... only goes to 1949 for the Chevrolet steering ***embly. 1949/1950/1951 and 1952 all are the same ... What interchanges with a 1940 Chevrolet ?? His sedan has the original box and column ... complete with original steering wheel. Any suggestions or cures appreciated Randy
Randy, Maybe the PO thought it was a Mustang II - they do resemble each other if it's the knee action. He can get help at Vintage Chevy Club and he may want to join. http://vcca.org/forum/ Good Luck!
The front end is not the only LIE ... I told my friend I would not buy it without seeing it but he pulled the trigger anyway. The car was a total misrepresentation ... The PO just found a trusting fellow to unload his JUNK on. I am just trying to help the guy ... so he can drive his car
According to the 1953 parts book 1940 uses a different part number for a complete steering box than 41-48. But all the major components, both housings and both shafts are the same so I would think any newer box up to and including 48 should work. Must be some minor difference but I sure haven't found it in the parts listing.
Also, it may be worth double checking the box adjustment. There are cam adjusters that control the mesh of the worm gear and roller on the pitman shaft that would be easy to overlook if you weren't familar with them.
SQUIRREL to the rescue AGAIN !! Thanks ... My friend is not much of a mechanic ( he barely can change the oil and filter ) but wanted a old Chevy. I hate that he got ripped and I appreciate the help ... just trying to help a friend
