My (great (great great?)) uncle Nate's mug shot. David Nathanial Watik (Watnikoff), doing time at Brushy Mountain in the 40s for armed robbery (full story).


Nate in younger, happier days. Second from R in dress thing with belt. I think he got involved with the Russian mob.



On a car note, from my Flanders 20 set.

 

That's Jimmy Doolittle looking over that "Big Motor".

 

These are 1942 Fords. Only year for that grille. The 46,7 and 8 had horizontal bars.

The pickup that is left of center in this photo has a couple of interesting boxes behind the cab. Anyone know what these might have been used for? Children? Dogs? Mail? Just wondering, Gary

46th and Troost, burned to the ground in 1925 - witnessed by a young Walter Cronkite, who later wrote....


"Our hill overlooked, a half dozen blocks away, Electric Park...One night after closing it burned in a spectacular fire. The Ferris wheel seemed to turn as the flames climbed up its sides. The grease caught fire on the two parallel tracks of the Greyhound Racer roller coaster, and twin blazes raced up and down with the speed of the cars that once toured the tumultouscircuit..."

Supposedly it was part of the inspiration for Walt Disney's (also a KC resident at that time) Disneyland....

"I Believe these to be 46 to 47s but if I was the lot owner, I would change lawn services...."

They are all '42's and have a unique grille for that year only. The trucks are also '42's. '46-'48 Mercurys have different front ends that appear similar to each other with subtle differences. The pickup truck design of the 46 and 47 is similar to the design of the '42's shown in the photo which was the first year for that style.

 

I bet it was a common variety delivery truck and anything that needed to kept dry went in there.

Let me see if I can resolve this issue. I went back and reviewed the group that this image came from and someone had mislabeled it as Used cars. It is from a group that included rationing for the start of WWII. The cars and trucks are all 1942 or older and were being held by the government rather than released to the buying public.

Often these images are hard to find because they are so poorly described by people that do not know what they are looking at. One of my favorite instances of this is the image of a Ford Cabriolet that has all 4 tires on a piece of glass to show how strong the glass is. It was described as a Jaguar since someone thought the greyhound hood ornament was a pouncing cat instead.
