What is a fair price to pay to have your driveshaft shortenned?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by malaguena, Oct 13, 2011.

  1. I was just quoted 325 bucks.. that seems insanely high.

This is just a standard steel ford pickup driveshaft that i need wacked down, its not like its stainless. I got home late and was only able to call one place before they all closed.

What is a fair price you think for cutting one down and having it welded back up?

I had a couple lengthened for around $100. Sounds like they are pricing a whole new shaft. Im in AZ.

In australia that's pretty cheap to mod a drive shaft and get it balanced

I just priced a new shaft with transmission yoke, and rear u-joint for 400.00. This was a balanced driveshaft for dragracing with 1350 joints. So, 300.00 + for shortening one seems a little pricey.

I don't want to sound racist because that's not the case. But, look for one of them small Mexican shops. Them guys are always cheaper for that kinda stuff and tires.

The only thing that would cost that much, is if it was a tube that has a step down at both ends and if the shortening goes beyond the step, then they'd have to do a new tube and balance...and new joints and a few excuses about the cost of supplies :)

Dan's here in LV shortened the shaft for my 31 when I swapped in the 700r4 for the PG - I think it was about $75, he also checked out my Auburn posi unit...but that wasn't included in the $75. He did a fine job. $325 sounds like either several driveshafts, or you let them see your Gold AmEx card too soon.

I've had drive shafts lengthened and shortened, with balancing, for $25.00 as long as I provided components (extra shaft for lengthening) by a shop specializing in heavy equipment for logging. It's been a couple of years since the last, but the price is probably about the same.
You may want to look at similar shops focusing on heavy equipment - it's quick easy cash money that can be earned on someone's lunch break.

I'm glad we did a good job for you.

Our current price is $88.50 and the shaft needs to be in good shape; uj's in new or like new condition, no significant dents, good seal surface on the slip yoke and as someone said before there has to be room on the tube to shorten it the amount you need. If the ends are swedged that can make some shafts only possible to shorten a certain amount or need to purchase a different weld yoke for the larger tube diameter.

We can do most one piece shafts for $325 with All new parts; new seamless tube, ****er sealed uj's, new weld yokes and a slip yoke, balanced and ***embled. 2.5" tube thru 4''
