I certainly agree however, with these "modern day" throw away cars the term "vintage" may cease to exist.

Racer5c's avatar says it all. I knew my opinion might strike a nerve and I realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder but nobody ever took a shit house and turned it into a Holiday Inn either. Please excuse me I'm going to kick the shit out of the cat.

Not trying to cause trouble with the winged car pictures, just trying to show the cars that were at Latimore Valley.

Looks like Sammy Swindells ride from some years back.
Posting these new cars is dangerous. I've seen two great threads get locked because of too new of vehicles being posted.

People restoring and preserving the winged cars then is a good thing its if the modern cars are throw away, they are keeping them around for the younger generation. Just think if people wouldn't have saved the old rail frames and junked them. I have a couple of wing cars 1 a 1981 era car and a 1982 car both of them were driven by 2 great drivers with great sprint car careers.

I think that there's room in the hobby for all types of cars , Younger people can't afford the older cars and the older cars are getting tougher to find especially cars with any history.

Sprint cars started getting ugly when you couldn't see the driver except for the helmet. Watching the driver drive is what got me hooked on open wheel racing and they had more respect for the car and each other. Most of todays kids drive over thier heads B/C they feel safe in thier superseats etc.

Remember when guys were so "loose" in their car, you could see them turn around and look behind them? I remember when the old man brought home some type of cargo straps from the National Guard post that he was going to make "shoulder harnesses" with. We couldn't believe the incredible steps in safety technology.

    Let's get back on track.

Here's a real race car, just needs some Dayton wheels, and an open face helmet.

Can you see the driver OK?

One thing is for sure, we are all passionate about open wheel racing. When I see an older sprint car on an open trailer whether it be a photo or live I still get goosebumps.

Regarding the Vargo Offy, this is a work of art. Is this the origional car? and if so was it built by Frank Kurtis? It has a Kurtis look.

Yes, it is a KK Midget stretched into a sprint car. It is the Original car.

Restored to the 1954 configuration. One minor quibble is the current owner chose a Corvette Red instead of a Darker red(Maroon) on the car.

    Still,it is a beauty,no doubt about it.

Here is a photo showing the maroon on the car at Williams Grove.

I'll never forget an old-timer watching sprints with me at Salem in the early 60s saying, "These damn forked 8s have taken all the sound out of racing."

  27. My opinion?

If it "CAN BE" competitive today, then it really doesn't belong on a track with several vintage race cars. It totally kills the point of taking in the experience. I can drive 2 hrs in any direction to see winged sprinters, but I have to drive sometimes a longer distance to see the artforms from yesterday.

A winged sprinter on the track with a cageless vintage car is like a shower with a raincoat.

Maybe the winged sprinters should have their own class, they keep coming anyway.

That was my thought when watching both wingless and winged this year at Latimore and Lincoln,Grove, etc.

I would rather see them in separate sessions.

The tracks response probably would be that there is only a limited window in the program so they dump them all together.

I would think they could separate them at Latimore, etc fairly easily, though.

Track time at Latimore could possibly be split up with wings and non winged cars during convention but I doubt during the fair also it would depend on the amount of each division of cars, but there is more and more of both styles of cars being restored

Hey Buildy, The driver wearing sunglasses in your photo (post # 16238) looks like Bobby Grim. What do you think? Denny Z
