Curious who built the Curtis #8 with the flared out nose and engine side panels?

 

This is one of the coolest photos I've ever seen. It almost looks live. Do you have any idea what that is blowing behind the driver in the #25? It doesn't seem to be around his arms, so I don't think it's a jacket that came loose. Kind of looks like a cape!

 

Looks to me like he didn't zip up his jacket and leaned forward at some point and the wind got it and has it blowing up on the right side like a cape. He may also have his right arm back trying to contain it as it doesn't appear his right hand is on the wheel.

 

That is Wally's shirt!

The chassis was constructed using Johnnie Parsons Autobrite midget. Parsons and Barney Christiansen lengthened the chassis and Lujie Lesovsky built the "cloverleaf" body. People either loved or hated the looks of this car.

As you can see from this picture, taken the same day as the action shot, Wally has his shirt unbuttoned, that's why it blew up over the headrest.

 

Incredible - you have another photo from the same day showing that shirt. Wild. These photos are fantastic. I really feel as if I'm am there. From the looks of Wally, he must have done a tour in the Navy. I'll bet he never lost too many fights, either. This last photo: look at the rides in the background! I love that maroon car and the old pickup. If you have more of these please post them. This is exactly what this thread is for. Also, do you know who took these photos? Was it you? Thanks for the response.

I`ve got to say,once again monkaz,these photos are outstanding!!

I also Note that the air is getting inside Jigg`s Shirt and makes him look kind of like the Michelin man in that high speed shot.

When I was a kid my grandmother lived right down the block from Frank Curtis. We tried to see what he was up to with the cars in his garage,but he was cranky and always chased us off.


Wally Campbell is another of my favorites! I`m I close in guessing Reading 1954?

You are not mistaken. He drove the # 8 car Jiggs Peters is driving in the photo.

I recently bought some items that once belonged to James L. Mannix. I tried a quick internet search and came up with nothing. If anyone on here could provide some background info on him that would be great!

Not to dwell on the subject but my contacts regarding Dan Wheldon's injuries report he was struck in the head by debris (suspensions, wheels, any amount of junk flying through the air with everyone), causing his injuries, not the fencing as first published.
