And for another famous native American, Geronimo and pals out for a drive. HotrodPrimer
posted this pic two years ago over on the thread where we search for extinct, rare and ultra-
rare cars and trucks, both domestic and foreign: "We ALL Love a DARE! PIX of TRULY
Extinct Makes?" The thread doesn't move fast like Dog's thread here, but we have fun
showing and discussing some super-scarce -- and, yes, even extinct -- vehicles, including
one-offs and even cars that never got off the drawing board. HPR said the Geronimo pic
was dates June 11, 1905, and the car appears to be a Locomobile, not a Caddy as ID'd in
the same photo cutline. Anyway, it's a fascinating photo showing the dramatic -- though
usually painful -- shift in culture for an entire group of human beings. I searched, and I
don't think this pic has been posted here previously. All these photos are on Wikipedia's
lengthy piece on Geronimo. Though they're in the public domain, I THANK the WikiMedia
Commons project for the blast from the past!

Gernonimo in 1887. Anybody recognize the rifle? He was nearly 80 in 1909
when he took a fall from his horse. The injuries aggravated an ongoing bout
of pneumonia, claiming his life. On his deathbed, he confessed that his only
regret was in surrendering to the U.S. Army. He is buried at Fort Sill in the
Apache Indian Prisoner of War Cemetery.

William Martin persuaded the aging chief to sit for a photo
portrait in 1905 when Geronimo was till a U.S. prisoner. As
I recall, he was imprisoned in Florida and was eventually sent
to Oklahoma. He died near Fort Sill in 1909.

Feisty Mescalero-Chiricahua Apache Chief Geronimo didn't stay in one place too long
while battling land encroachment by the U.S. and Mexico. Here, he's pictured in 1889
in Northern Mexico. Obviously, his band used whatever weapons they could lay hands
on. Looks as though the guys at left have Winchester repeaters (Spencer?). Not sure
about the guy beside Geronimo; Sharps breach-loader, maybe? And his own rifle looks
(to my untrained eye, anyway) like maybe a civil-war-era Springfield.

Quite the celebrity in his lifetime, Geronimo rode as one of the "Parade Chiefs" in President
Teddy Roosevelt's March 1905 inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. Teddy, of course, had
a deep interest in the natural beauty and fauna of the nation, as well as genuine regard for
native Americans. Other parade chiefs included American Horse and Hollow Horn Bear.
    Photo THANKS to Smithsonian magazine!

Repros of this photo are available on eBay inexpensively. As a celebrity
-- though technically still a prisoner of war! -- he enjoyed adventures that
would have made Harry Truman sit up and take notice. This photo looks
to me like it may have been one of the publicity photos which Geronimo
autographed for visitors to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Notice, he
could possess ceremonial bow and arrows -- NO more rifles!

  8. First off, I'd like to say, I've enjoyed this thread for quite awhile. Love the cars shots, the gas station shots, and the interesting people featured in this thread.

I've also avoided posting on this thread because I've always known what I should post here.

Well here's a pic, close to my heart!!!

This is my Mother during WWII 42-43, Doing her Gen. Douglas MacArthur pose. Love this pic, shows her personality till the day she died.

Thanks, Oldfart36, THANKS for showing your Mom and her sense

of humor!:D One of the coolest things about Dog's "Vintage Shots"
thread -- besides cars, pickups, planes, buildings and street scenes,
gas stations, roadside diners, etc. -- is the PEOPLE behind every
    of those things.

I just lost my own Mom last month at age 84. All she ever did in her
life was work her fingers to the bone. She loved my dad and all her
family, was a GREAT cook, a great shepherd to youngsters, and she
basically (like Dad) seemed to do everything with practically no re-
    sources.

With 7 billion people on the planet, I truly believe that what EACH
INDIVIDUAL does in everyday life become their legacy. In that re-
spect, I reckon you and I both see our moms as veritable giants!
And if your loved ones remember ALL of the "little things," then you
    never really die, do you?;)

God bless all our forebears, and God bless the HAMB.:) Dog, you
probably never guessed this thread would develop a life of its own, eh? <!-- / message -->

    THAT is COOL.. thanks
interesting to pick out the details,,
like the stub sticking out the tower above the entrance to the building,
looks like it went to the red flag in the old pic, funny how they left it..

"Geronimo"?? I'll go ya' one better - at
least as far as keeping things somewhat
'automotive' related here! <lol> LOL! Here a
pic of the *original* "Pontiac" - as in "Chief
    Pontiac of the Ottawas
    " (Born 1720 -Died
1769) - who among other things, besieged
Fort Detroit while fighting against and very
nearly defeating the British in North America
    - and whose name was later appropriated
by 'Generous Motors' for a brand of car they
    don't make anymore!:D

Been rather busy lately making parts for my little cars but here are a few more for the pile.
The junkyard pile below should make some Hambers cry when they see the grille right in the center of it:eek:

I think the aircraft in the second pic is a Northrop N-3P, could have been Norwegian as there country markings were a Roundel somewhat akin to the British Roundel.
Not sure about the other ones from the first pic, would have to look that one up.
