Description

New Knox automobiles lined up along the Eastern Promenade for a company publicity photograph. The Portland Company was the sole distributor of Knox automobiles and trucks in the state of Maine.--

 

It's not a pointless hobby. Just think of the entertainment and education that you're providing for the rest of us!

Now pointless would be if you were to actually go to the site of these old photos and take current pictures of the place as it looks today.

Ummm... yeah. I've done that.

So on my way to Indy on Labor Day weekend I kept a sharp lookout as I got a little bit south of Elwood, Ind. And sure enough, it's still there as an operating restaurant near the airport. Though I didn't see any carhop (plane hop?) babes toting food out on the runway.

The mighty weight of the Great Depression years did not suppress progress in technology
and beautiful design. And the mighty streamliner locomotives of the '30s made our beloved
earlier, trad locos suddenly look like real antiques! Here, thanks to Wikipedia, is a posed
publicity shot from 1937 showing the B&O Railroad's Royal Blue poised on the Thomas Via-
duct south of Baltimore while on the New-York-to-Washington, D.C., run. Beautiful piece of
groundbreaking machinery in a well-planned shot gets my vote for one of the INSTANT
CLASSIC frames of Dog's great thread! Yo, Mart! Can you blow this up a bit but not HUGE?
The Royal Blue locomotive was in the 4-6-2 "President" class, also used by the Union Pacific.

 

SWI, thanks for the post of the '23 teardrop car, actually the FIRST
teardrop car. Here's another super-early aero car of interest:


1914 Castagna Alfa Romeo 40/60 HP Aerodinamica, thanks
to the site, Coachbuild.com. One of the earliest aerodynamic
cars shows just how early folks were experimenting with
making autos streamlined and, thus, more fuel-efficient!
Alfa continued to improve -- and race -- this FAST car through
1922.

 

THEN-AND-NOW: As these pics from LiveJournal.Retrofuturism show, at least one of these
remains in existence, though I don't know just where it resides. These folks apparently
quoted the pix from Corbis, so I THANK Corbis, as well!

How's this Jimi - an enlarged 'by about
30%' version of original Wikipedia
image? I tried going bigger, but on this
particular pic, beyond about 30% and
the resolution and picture clarity fell off
rapidly.
