Do you think the powerpak heads are worth taking apart a well running engine alone? Or maybe pick em up cheap and wait?
The power pack heads are currently on the engine and there seems to be at least one bad exhaust valve, thats the main reason the engine is coming apart. I also have to pull it to do some work on the engine/trans mounts and some general detail work on the fire wall and what not so I figured now was the time to do it! I'd also like to replace the valve seats so I can run pump gas w/no lead additive.
We sell these Flo Tek complete heads for $799. Not Pro Comp crap. Machined and assembled in Evansville Indiana Really nice heads for the money. Just bolt them on and go. Option of spring choice same price. You can't really do up a set of stock heads that will perform within 50% of these for that cheap.
.125 overbore, Early blocks were best for this and was fairly common in the day. A screamer of a motor to boot.
I put an early '60s two barrel 283 in front of a 350 and a 3.0-9" in my 48 Plymouth. Put an Edlebrock 650 on a cast iron manifold on top. Plenty of power for any street app. Runs great. The 3.0 might be a little low gear.
Me too! Nice little solid lifter cam with a pair of 400 CFM AFB's or 3 or 4 Rottenchesters on top. Sweet.
Or bore it 0.125 and put the 327 crank in it and voila you got a 327........and then take the 355 crank and stroke the 327 and you got a 350 Or just use the 355 and cal it a bored and stroked 283
i have a couple 283's, i think i want to try a set of 906 vortec heads, a vortec 3X2 intake running 2-jets, a hydraulic roller thumper cam using the 3.1 lifters, i also have a small 327 crank and a couple 350 blocks, i'll just buy the thick main bearings, their $200 but i think for me it's the best way to go.

I´ve just built a 61 283 with pop up forged pistons ,.060 over, balanced rotating assembly,old camel hump heads with 1.96/1.50 valves, an Edelbrock performer rpm cam, the old Edelbrock Torker Intake and a 600 cfm Holley. It´s still on the engine stand, so I can´t give you any numbers. My guess is the cam is quite aggressive and the compression rather high at 11.2:1, but we have pump gas up to 102 octane over here, so I don´t sweat it..... yet, hahaha My plan was to build a 301, but I couldn´t bring myself to punch out a good block all the way to 4". Now at .060 over I have a couple of rebuilds left until I`m at 4" This engine is going to replace the 355 I have in my 34 Plymouth right now, maybe I´ll find the time to change engines this winter
Look for a 416 casting number. Its what i have. 1.84 1.60 valves stock. I had mine punched to 1.94s. Heres a video of my 283 chevy motor.
