WIDE 5 adapters....

....from Speedway. They are 3/8" thick. Heavy ****ers...will do wonders for my unsprung weight! haha Anyway, they come with standard conical lugnut holes (dual pattern) but the outer tangs (where the wide 5 wheel bolts to) have big *** bolts threaded through from the back side. What type of nut do I use? These bolts are like 5/8ths(?). Are there lug nuts that big? Surely Speedway doesn't intend you to use standard flat washers and bolts?! I thought I'd ask here to get a real world usage type answer as opposed to a "they're suppose to be fine" type of reply from SW.

 

Those are for stock car use, I have been making these for 5 yrs, these are made for the correct 1/2" stud size in 4.5, 4.75, and 5.5 x 5 sizes. They change the track 1" wider and add 5lbs per wheel unsprung weight. If interested PM

 

I done already bought the SW units....would just as soon use 'em if I can. They seem to have these marketed as hot rod adapters, they market their aluminum deals as the stock car units.

 

Can you redrill them for the correct Ford 1/2" studs, rotated 36 degrees?

 

I need to order just one of these when I get the cash so I can adapt my rear tire carrier to the back of my '35.

I bought the SW ones long before I knew **** sold the adapters. The 5/8" bolts were sort of annoying and the bolt heads sticking out caused all kinds of problems with the brake drums. If you stay with the SW ones, I would recommend removing the bolts, drill out the threads to match a knurled shoulder lug stud. Dorman makes a stud with flange, and a 5/8" knurled shoulder with a 1/2" standard thread to run the stock sized lug nuts. I think I paid like $25 or something at my local auto parts store for a couple boxes. Drilled out the threads and pressed them in. Easy cheesy!

 

Jeem, The easy way to handle that would be to head out to a good parts store and go through the collection of wheels studs untill you find something with a serated outer that is just a bit bigger than the 5/8" bolt hole. Drill them up to that size, press them in and you are in buisiness with 1/2" studs. Easy peasey...

With the studs pressed in.... You may have to grind/mill a little bit of the stud head off to clear the brake drum. No big deal though.

 

so pretty much your tires stick out 3'8 of an inch........

 

I lucked out, I guess, as the bolt heads clear the 8" rear brake drums by about an 1/8th inch. Discs up front so they clear there too. I'm just going to order the 5/8 fine thread lugnuts and be done with it. I guess I just didn't realize there IS such a thing as a 5/8 lugnut. Doh! Caps still pop on over them (I checked with regular 5/8 nuts) so I think that's what I'm gonna do!

And yeah LUCKYDEVIL310, the adapters throw the wheels out an extra 3/8ths per side.

around here that is a standard dirt track car lug nut. Check at your local roundy round shop for the lug nuts. The stud size has worked for me in the past with an unmodified wide five wheel and the speedway adapter.

 

That's all you hadda say mang! I'll check with one of the few roundy round shops here in town.

 

I agree, drill and press in 1/2" studs crowd.

For anybody that just needs to use one for mounting/balancing (or holding on a spare tire carrier), I could not find any 5/8 fine tapered lug nuts anywhere but Speeday, so I ended up using a set of 16mm nylock nuts from Fastenal..... worked great for mount/bal, and the 5/8 bolts are a close fit to the holes in the wheels, plenty good for a spin balance machine.

 

Just took one of my wide fives (portly pents?) and ran a 5/8" fine thread bolt through one of the holes... Would have never thought it would work on a stocker, but no problem. Locally you might talk to Flexie Flyer down by Steve's, or Ellis Racing on 31st and Virginia. Who the hell is that in your avatar these days?

 

Ellis! That's the one I was trying to remember. Yeah, Chip the the 5 5/8's "studs" make a snug fit for the wheel.
