Re #21985 : this is a LOT better than many current veterans are getting. As a country, we have lost all sense of direction, pride and purpose. Got instead a lot of gadgets and "celebrities".

Thanks for the pic of the Checker (ca. 1938???). Used to, taxis were
barely considered real automobiles, like the Detroit, South Bend, Ken-
osha, etc., makes. Every guy I knew turned up his nose at any taxis,
except for parts. But regardless of what anyone said, Checker knew
how to survive, even despite the depression. I like the grille on the
model above -- so gaudy it's actually rather attractive! And, it surly
made a Checker easier for a customer to spot. I believe they were
using a Continental engine during the '30s, only switching to Chevy
stovebolt sixes and 283s in '65. It may come as a surprise to some,
but Checker stamped and built its own bodies during the '30s, AS
WELL AS truck bodies for Hudson (!), complete Ford truck cabs, plus
truck bodies for REO. For decades, Checker stayed healthy by pro-
ducing automotive components for major car companies as a third-
party OEM supplier. (In a related footnote, when Studebaker shifted
all production to Canada for '65, they needed an affordable powerplant
and found it at Chevrolet; they turned to Checker Motors for an adapter
plate to mate the Chevys to Borg-Warner transmissions.) When owner
Morris Markin passed on, the company's final-generation body dies wore
out, and the feds heaped on costly environmental requirements, Checker
ceased auto production after '82 and instead concentrated on being a
supplier to the industry, in particular GM.

Thanks for the Checker trivia Jimi. We had a Checker dealership in town for a short time in the sixties. I remember a black sedan with whitewalls and full wheel covers with all the chrome was pretty impressive looking sitting on the showroom floor. We also had a Checker taxi (Yellow Cab)that had two front ends on it so it looked like it comming when it was going.

[QUOTEI just wanted to point out that many people painted their car with a brush in the '50's and '60's and it came out looking surprisingly good.
    Thanks for helping on this.[/QUOTE]
I did it in the 80's.
