Here's a couple from 1965 at Green Pine Raceway in Pennsylvania, just south of Williamsport. These were taken by a gentleman named Jim Sampsel who gave them to me this summer. Pretty cool how this old stuff keeps showing up....not to mention the tow bar!!!

  15. Great stuff Dave! I wonder if the front wheels on the Mike Steinberg car (post #1862) are the ones I am running on my car now. 4 lug Halibrands, not common at all. I got them in a trade about 25 years ago.

The first four pics are from Indy 1967. The Carl Hegge truck pics are from Aquasco Speedway in Maryland. Probably 1967 or '68. I took the Don Montgomery pic at Orange County Raceway in 1970 at a BB/GS and AA/FA event. Those were such awesome shows.

Kevin, your wheels could be the same ones as the location of your valve stems are in the same place as Mikes. I have an old pair that the valve stems are on the inside of the rims. I was told they were old dirt track/ sprint car rims as they put the stems on the inside because of dirt and rocks tearing the stems off. I don't know if this is fact but makes sense to me.

Dave Hales, great pictures of one of the best old Willys gassers still around. Owned by one of the nicest guys I have ever met! The whole S&S gang is first class!

    great pics guys

would anyone have a shot of the chassis &/or front suspension of the aggitator pick ups?

i'd like to build a scale model of the red one as well as the striped one, but can't find pics of the chassis.

some pics i see the truck is high, & then it's low, so i'm not sure if they started out with parallel leafs and then progressed to a coil?

also, some drive train info would be helpful

thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi Mike
Thank you for taking the photo of Don Montgomery's Rockerhead Willys forty one years ago. It is a great photo that I can show guys when I drive the Willys now (as you know most of us took very few pictures). The Willys has now made the full circle back to a street driven car. Your photo shows how it used to look with the blown Chrysler engine. Attached is the way it looks now. Don

Don Montgomery, what front axle do you in in your 42 coupe? I ask because you sold me your original front axle many years ago and I still have it on the shelf. It had alot of caster wedge welded on.

    Hi Dave

I think you have my original Willys axle. I ran the stock axle up to about 1970 (with lots of caster) and then had a tube axle built and installed at Don Blair's shop. The stock type parallel springs were replaced by coil overs. Peter Eastwood did the work. The object was to reduce the front end weight. Spindle mount Halibrands were added then also.
After sitting in my yard for 30 years I rebuilt the coupe into a street rod. It turned out to be a nice car to drive and for trips. It has a Mustang II front end. It is comfortable and handles well. Note that the Willys is actually a '41 Americar with 1942 bumpers. I thought that the '42 bumpers looked better.
Trivia: The same guy that lettered the car in 1968 lettered it again in 2004.
My wife and I are again able to enjoy using our Willys.. The neat part for me is that it is my old race car.

From the outside its hard to tell a 41 from a 42 but the bumpers are the first clue and some dont like the grille divider. Yes, I have your original Willys axle. What year did you start racing your coupe? Being a California car and a race car so early on I bet its a clean machine as far as any rust. Looks great and its awesome you kept it all those years to enjoy now. I know you have lots of old pics and I would love to see some if you ever find the time to post.

Glad you're still enjoying the pic after all this time. Even better, you still have the Willys. When I sent the pictures I had for your gasser book, I think I sent the one of your car in color. I know I have it somewhere. If I can find it, I'll post it up. Thanks for all the enjoyable reading over the years. Hope you're working on more. Mike

Thanks for the kind words...The old car is still around thanks to Tom Timoszyk and his family. Here is what it looked like when he bought it at Carlise in the late 90's. It had obviously been neglected for a long time, but it still had all the body parts (fenders, hood, doors, deck lid etc.) and the original frame, floors, firewall, roll bar and even the upolstery from the early 60's. Tom's son Steve is here on the HAMB, and I'm sure he can fill in some of the details, but bottom line is they saved it!!!
